    Chapter 1

TOM WAS IN THE BOARD room talking to a team of colleagues. They were knee-deep in work with notes and files spread out all over the table as they strategized. When I knocked on the door, Tom motioned me in.

Yes, Miss Harks? he asked in the most professional tone ever.

I got those stats you needed for the Johnson account.

    Excellent.

I handed him a folder with a sticky note that said staff meeting needs scheduled ASAP. 3:15? Staff meeting was code for ‘let’s make out.’ There’s something about the creation of a secret, shared language that nobody knew but us that gave us quite the thrill.

He nodded, then went back to his meeting. I didn’t expect much of a reaction from him. After all, if anyone suspected anything, the rumors would spread like wildfire. The last thing I ever wanted was to be Monday’s gossip! We had to live like we were on stage and everyone was watching us. We were professional and left the touches, flowers, and winks at home. We never held hands on the way out. We never left cards on each other’s desk. We knew none of these behaviors would go unnoticed. We were also concerned about security that included surveillance cameras in the parking lot and stairwells.

I grinned as I left the boardroom. We were always up for the office kiss. Maybe it was the thrill of getting caught. Maybe it was the adrenaline rush. Maybe it was because we were both just plain crazy. Or maybe it was because we had crazy chemistry and couldn’t keep our hands off each other.

The sound of our silent breathing was muffled by the over-enthusiastic air-conditioning. Barely. We still had to keep it down, or there was no telling who might hear us and what they might think.

I wouldn’t want to strain you, he continued, panting softly into my shoulder. I bit my lip and stifled a groan. After all, the copy room was your idea. I said we should meet in the supply room downstairs where nobody goes.

It’s wasn’t, I hiked my leg up higher, "my idea. The words were short and punctuated by gasping breaths. This is our special spot. So it was the most logical place to go. And you said no to the elevator."

Yeah, because we almost got busted! Despite what was happening, Tom couldn’t resist a breathless chuckle. "Honestly, Jenna, we can do better than this as our special spot."

I squeezed my eyes shut as my back arched against the machine. A deep moan escaped my lips, and he quickly clamped down his hand over my mouth.

    But the damage was done.

As he shifted balance, I slipped against the panel of buttons operating the copier. All at once, the thing started beeping and whirling as a virtual flood of papers began shooting out.

What did you do? Tom asked accusingly, pulling away, and when he took a step back, he half fell into a supply closet.

I didn’t do anything! I jumped off the machine and stared at it in horror, punching random buttons to get it to stop.

If anything, my frantic assault only made things work. The machine picked up speed and began shooting things out, double time. There was now a small pile building up on the floor.

    Hey—is everything okay in there?

Tom and I froze as the doorknob jiggled from the outside.

    Why is this thing locked?

We threw each other silent looks of panic, before I shoved him the rest of the way into the closet, whirling around desperately.

    The closet? Really? he hissed.

I ignored him, buttoning my blouse at the speed of light. What would look stranger? If you were in here or me?

He gave me another glare, but I pushed him farther inside, arranging a few old janitor uniforms neatly over him, before shutting the door. When I was confident that everything looked as it should, I waded through the growing sea of papers and yanked open the door. The face of a young intern stared back at me in confusion, a confusion that only intensified when he peered past me into the windstorm of paper.

    I...think I broke the machine.

    Understatement of the year.

He rushed in past me, and, casting me a sideways glance, pushed the power button. The machine instantly shut down, filling the room with a sudden, incriminating quiet.

I opened my mouth to say something clever, but eventually, just pointed half-heartedly at the button. I hadn’t tried that one yet...

The intern nodded slowly, avoiding eye contact. That’s alright, Miss Harks. I can get this cleaned up for you. Was there something, in particular, you needed copied?

Hmm? I looked up distractedly, half torn between discreetly fixing my disheveled hair and wondering why this random intern knew my name. Oh, um, no. I’m pretty sure I already have a copy on my desk. But thank you...Jason, I hastily read his I.D. card.

He blushed deeply when I said his name, turning back to the machine in a hurry. Well, I’ll at least get this cleaned up.

As he bent over and got to work, picking up the pieces of collateral from my make out session with Tom, I cast a fearful look at the closet. Tom was still in there, fuming—no doubt, listening to every word we said. I couldn’t just leave and make him wait while the kid straightened up the room—who knew how long that would take? And who knew if he would have to open the closet in doing so. I wasn’t an expert on where things went in this basement jungle, but I was guessing the kid was, and I wasn’t taking any chances.

Jake, listen, you don’t have to—

It’s Jason, he corrected automatically. Then he met my gaze with another blush. But it’s okay, you can call me Jake.

I cocked my head with a frown, considering the strangeness of that statement, before ushering him out with gentle hands.

Sorry—Jason. To be honest, Jason, I’m working on a presentation speech for the Larchwoods down here. I didn’t want to do it in my office with people buzzing around, and I thought this was a place I could practice without disturbing anyone. I gave him a convincing smile as I glanced at the machine. I bumped it by mistake, and I’m ashamed to say I don’t have any practice on this model. But hey—I need to get back to it, and I don’t want to waste your time by making you clean all this up. I’m sure you have other important things you could be doing.

Not really, he shrugged, I was just going on Pia Montera’s coffee run.

I seized upon the golden opportunity. And if Pia doesn’t get her double espresso, she’s going to be fuming upstairs. I man-handled him to the door and pushed him out, closing it carefully behind him. Good luck Jason, and Godspeed.

I flipped the lock as his feet shuffled down the hall, and leaned against the door, clutching my chest. That had been close. Even closer than last time.

There was a rustling inside the closet, and the door pushed open as Tom climbed out. He peeled an old dust rag from his shoulder with disgust and shot me a look. ‘Good luck and Godspeed?’ What is this, Cape Kennedy?

Shut up, I murmured, still clutching my chest, and help me clean this stuff up.

Tom looked down at the papers with a sigh. You should have just let him do it; I could have stayed there until he was finished. The smell of ammonia was really starting to grow on me.

I snorted and got down on my hands and knees, gathering up papers. Would you quit playing around and help? I thought the poor thing was very polite under the circumstances—you should give him a raise.

It was Tom’s turn to laugh. "Yeah, a raise is just was Jason was after."

What is that supposed to mean?

He shot me a bemused smile. He has a crush on you—they all do—all the interns. Why do you think he knew your name?

I piled the papers on a footstool with a small frown. What are you talking about? How would you possibly know that?

I may live at the top of the building, but I still hear things. He chuckled. The whole building is still abuzz about the hot, new consultant on Patti Macer’s team.

    I blushed.

    Chapter 2

WE COULDN’T STOP SMIRKING coyly and stealing glances throughout the day. It was the most thrilling thing I'd ever done. The office wasn’t a boring place. Tom and I had a huge secret that provided a charge that gave going to work a whole new allure. Instead of just spending time attending meetings, drawing up mergers, and making phone calls, I was now brushing legs with my boss under the table, and meeting in the copy room for a few minutes during the day. And the best part? No one had any idea what we were doing. The secret excitement set both of us on a high that made work much more fun. I had somebody to send texts to during a meeting, or accidentally brush up against when grabbing a morning cup of coffee.

When I went into Tom’s office, the gorgeous blonde manager in our office was chatting with him. She tossed her head back and laughed. I tried not to get jealous as I watched him laugh at one of her jokes. She accidently knocked something off his desk. He bent down to pick up the container of pens while she checked out his butt. I shot her a look and she smiled.

The files are on your desk, sir, I said.

    Thank you, Miss Harks.

The blonde said goodbye and followed me out.

Did you get a good look at him? I did that on purpose. He is so hot!

    He’s your boss, I said.

Oh, don’t be such a prude, Jenna. There’s no harm in looking. Besides, he wouldn’t give any of us here at the office a chance.

My eyes twinkled at her comment as I pictured my lips on Tom’s as we kissed.

I think those games would be much better enjoyed by Michael, I said.

She laughed. True. But it appears he travels through women, and I much prefer to find one place and set up shop. Michael has already taken home half the call center, most of the corporate communications team, and every temp receptionist ever. Besides, I think I’m turned on more by the big brother. Tom has those dark locks, that gorgeous white smile, and those beautiful eyes. He’s pretty much perfect. And he’s so mysterious. He’s rejected some of the hottest gals at the office for years. No beautiful and smart woman even has a shot.

Because he only dates outside of work.

I wonder what he’s like outside of work. Because he’s so serious here. Such a workaholic. Think he’s gay?

    No! I said.

    How would you know?

Well, um, I wouldn’t. But I can just tell. He’s just a private person. And he doesn’t mix business with pleasure.

    Usually.

I was an exception to the rule.

She let out a long breath. I might look and joke, but I would never date co-workers and other dangerous creatures, such as my boss.

    I nodded. "Yep, keep it
