Don't Jump! It's Only a Bump - David Heyl
Dave
Foreword
DEPRESSION IS THE UNWANTED GUEST IN THE LIVES OF AN ESTIMATED 350 million people worldwide. It creeps in through many different avenues: genetics, abuse, trauma, mistakes, guilt, and loss, to name a few. It’s lonely, it’s heavy, and it convinces you that you will never get rid of it.
As a licensed psychotherapist, I have treated clients battling this weight for over ten years. In America, 17 percent of the population struggles with a diagnosed major depressive episode in their lives, but I can attest that most of the population will deal with the themes of depression at some point in their lives. There are common threads that we all share when we struggle in life, whether a loss of hope that the pain could ever subside, a belief that the experience of love will never exist again, or a lack of motivation and purpose. For so many, depression leaves its mark in our relationships with God and others. We were made to love and be loved and when we are no longer able to receive love, we lose our purpose; the very thing we were created to do becomes the source of anguish in our lives. In these times, we need a lifeline to get back to life as we once knew it.
I have known Dave Heyl for several years, and it doesn’t surprise me that his unassuming confidence comes through in this book. He is the first to admit that he doesn’t have all the answers to fix your life, while at the same time he exudes confidence that you can rise out of any depression or trauma you are facing. He genuinely wants to help.
My husband and I got to know Dave through a Bible study group in which we shared that we wanted to have a child but were disappointed that we had not yet. Dave prayed for us and was quick to show us empathy. He never dismissed our pain; instead, he invited us to trust God with our family. In the midst of our questions, he was able to believe for us that we would one day play with our kids. Now, two children later, we often talk about that season of life and the joy (and exhaustion) our kids bring us. Dave doesn’t invalidate the pain you are facing; he instead points you to a God who loves you and is available to see you through your darkest hour. His book is a true representation of his belief that hope in any situation is within reach.
Don’t Jump! It’s Only a Bump is an encouraging, hope-filled book. It provides practical ways of rising above your current mood and circumstances to be able to embrace the readily available love from God and others. In my clinical experience, depression can render one paralyzed to make any changes and see beyond the present moment. As the book’s title suggests, Dave has focused on this aspect of depression and provides scriptures from the Bible and useful analogies for examining your life. He offers scriptures and stories to encourage you forward rather than condemn you.
Taking a step forward can be overwhelming to someone struggling with depressive symptoms. Don’t Jump! It’s Only a Bump offers small, manageable interventions you can try that can guide you out of feeling helpless in your life. Dave understands the fragile nature of someone who does not want to fail at one more thing, because he has been there.
Along with his message of encouragement, Dave has provided a step-by-step opportunity to change your outlook, including a prayer to repeat to help guide you toward a life of optimism. Even his chapters have been thoughtfully planned, each to be read in one sitting, as if to say that you can accomplish something by just picking up the book! I would encourage you to sit down and read a chapter and seek to implement some of the ideas in that chapter before moving to the next. By the end of the book, you will have found at least a handful of ideas that can have a big impact on your outlook.
The number-one cause of suicide is untreated depression. It is a heartbreaking discovery that most people who eventually take their own lives do so in lonely isolation. For the person who feels unloved and thinks no one cares, Dave paints a picture of a loving God who understands even the most misunderstood person. Dave wants you to get to know the One who has continued to change his life and mine. May you find this love and hope and help to end depression’s unwanted intrusion into your life.

Preface
Don’t Jump! It’s Only a Bump was written with one goal in mind: to offer a solution to men and women who suffer from depression and thoughts of suicide. The solution proposed has helped many, some of whose stories I’ve included in this book.
I firmly believe that personal circumstances and setbacks, regardless of difficulty, are simply bumps in the road of life. Everyone experiences them. What really matters is how a person manages them.
The approach I’ve taken is simple and straightforward: tying a person’s physical, emotional, and spiritual well-being to depression, and then sharing positive results from real people and their situations. I’m convinced these three areas of well-being are linked to depression and its severity; thus, if one area is missing or weak, the more difficult depression is to overcome.
All the stories in Don’t Jump! are true and are shared by the men and women portrayed with permission and with their names changed to grant them anonymity. Every chapter in the book, which is faith based, contains suggestions, Bible scriptures, and anecdotes written to encourage, uplift, and inspire those suffering from depression and suicidal thoughts. Regardless of your spiritual background, religious teachings, or beliefs, I believe you will be able to apply these chapters to your personal life and circumstances.
Acknowledgments
Writing Don’t Jump! It’s Only a Bump has been one of the most rewarding experiences of my life, at once satisfying, meaningful, and inspiring. But writing it was not a one-person job. Its successful completion owes much to the expertise of my editor, Richard Lowenstein, whose untiring effort and exceptional know-how were indispensable to the finished product you hold in your hands. Most of all, the book would not have been possible without the encouragement of my beautiful wife Carla. Her unfailing support and enduring love guided me from start to finish.
CHAPTER ONE
Victory
WHETHER IT’S SPORTS, BUSINESS, OR ANY PART OF OUR PERSONAL lives, we all like to win. It doesn’t matter if it’s a simple game of Monopoly with friends and family, organized sports, or activities related to work. Winning is important, and I’m sure you agree we all like to be on a winning team. It helps our self-esteem and makes us feel . . . well, like winners. Winning is positive. Everybody likes to win. Positive is good, and everybody likes positive.
I’ve played hockey, baseball, football, golf, racquetball, basketball, horseshoes, beanbag toss, and many other sports in my life and still participate in several noncontact sports, always with the same goals: to play my best and to try to win. I’ve not mastered all these activities, but I do enjoy participating in them, so I lose as much as I win (and sometimes even lose more than I win, depending on the competition). At the game of golf, I’m very average, which means I can hit an awesome shot and an extremely ugly (bad) shot, one right after the other. I’ve driven a ball two hundred yards plus, only to slice the next shot right into a lake. Nevertheless, I will tell you that with every game I start, I put forth my best effort and have the goal of winning. And while victory is the goal, playing my best and putting forth one hundred percent is almost as good as winning. No effort plus no goal equals, usually, no victory.
The purpose of Don’t Jump! It’s Only a Bump is to help you experience victory regardless of your circumstances. Let’s take my game of golf as an example. I play golf every summer and have since I was a teenager. As I said earlier, I’m a very average golfer, and one of the reasons
