2Chapter 1: Her Early Beginnings
On March 28, 1990, a world class talent was born to a jewelry making mother, and a businessman father.
Zoe Elizabeth Sugg, or Zoella
, was born in Lacock, a civil parish and village in Wiltshire, England. It is a one of a kind village because it is owned by the National Trust and has also gained reputation as a tourist attraction because the original looks of the village have been preserved and have attracted a lot of visitors for being a good way of seeing the past.
You can say that Zoella really did come from humble beginnings. Lacock is pretty much composed of no more than 300 people, and when you’re in that kind of situation, it’s either you become very confident, or you become shy because you’re surrounded by people who know you. And Zoella, before she became the woman that she is today, was a really shy girl. In fact, that’s one of the reasons why she joined the Vlogging, or Video Blogging Community—but more on that later.
3When she was twelve, she became an extra in Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone, then in the following year, she also appeared in Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets but she says that you really could not see her as she was just part of the crowd. She did get to keep her uniforms or costumes from the movies, though. In fact, she has two of them: One for Slytherin and one for Hufflepuff, which was amazing because it brings out the Potterhead, the term given to a Harry Potter fan, in her. She also got to watch one of the Spiderman movies with Emma Watson, Daniel Radcliffe, and Rupert Grint, the three main stars of the Harry Potter franchise. After the said movies, she went back to living a quiet and normal life. For her, it was mostly about staying in school, going home, and spending time with her family.
Zoella has always been a fan of beauty blogs. In fact, she admits that she spent a lot of time reading beauty blogs while working for an interior design company as an apprentice. Then, in February 2009, as a result of boredom and of the need to express herself, she created her blog, which was aptly called Zoella
.
She mainly wrote about beauty—the products that she uses, the products that she likes, and her opinions about the items that she purchased. Before she knew it, people started following her blog, and asking her opinions about things that are connected to beauty and more. Zoella felt good about writing her thoughts because it was a great way of expressing herself and reaching out to a lot of people. She also loved making new friends online, and she felt good whenever people praised her work, or just talked to her about what she has written.
Then, after a couple of months, she decided to take her blogging skills to the next level—she decided to try vlogging, or video blogging, by setting up her own Youtube channel. For Zoella, it wasn’t a way of seeking attention, or flaunting herself, but it was a way of fighting her shyness, and trying to be a better and more confident individual.
She still remembers how she felt when she made her first video back in 2009. It was just a simple video of her and a friend shopping around in Brighton, and she has since set the video to private
because it was so amateurish, but she still has fun watching it from time to time. Then, came the life changing video called 60 things in my bedroom
, which became one
