Chapter One: The Crime:
––––––––
December 19th, 2012, 10:00 a.m.
No sooner had Ono Yumiko, the Fuji Apartments cleaning lady, unlocked the Gabriel’s front door, she began to sense that something was wrong. First of all, the house was deadly quiet. The professor, David Gabriel, usually had the Clash blasting while he was grading papers. Many of the neighbors had to come over in the morning and ask him to turn down his stereo. Yumiko had to hit pause or turn it off in order to talk to her client.
The silence shocked her almost to the point that she worried that she had unlocked wrong the apartment. She looked at the door to see if she was at the Gabriel apartment. Yes, the metal nameplate said Apartment 337
. Were David and Ashley sick? No, they would have sent her an e-mail last night. Maybe the complaints finally got to him? Nope, he’s been blaring the Clash for two years. So...
That’s when Yumiko noticed the strong scent of rusting metal in the air. The cleaning lady guessed that she was smelling coppery stench of blood. Blood coupled with the scent of gun power. The cleaning lady had to smell a couple more times to see if she wasn’t imagining things. Is that...?
Fearing the worst, Yumiko raced down the hall. She noticed that the bathroom light was on. The cleaning lady ran over and poked her head inside. All of the color drained from her face when she saw Ashley slumped over edge of the bathtub, dead. The tips of her wet hair brushed the blood on the floor. Water from the tub mixed with said blood on the floor. Yumiko could see was red on the walls, floor, and water. Mrs. Gabriel looked as if she was trying to get out of the bathtub when she was killed with her body hanging half out of the tub. One hand was resting, curled up next to the tub. Yumiko slowly stepped backwards before running further down the hall.
David-san!
she cried. David-san! David-san!
She ran straight to his office. The nightmare became heavier. The professor himself was slumped over on his desk with four gun shots to the back of his head. Blood had seeped into the papers that he was grading for the morning. His head landed on a taller stack while his left hand still clutched his pen as it rested on a shorter stack. Small objects like paper clips and pens were scattered on the desk and floor. Yumiko was too choked up with terror too scream out. She reached into her jeans pocket and pulled out her cell phone to call the cops.
By lunch, Tokyo University was rocked with a double homicide. Students and neighbors watched as the bodies were hauled out the Gabriel apartment. The police asked Yumiko many questions at the front door.
Do you have any ideas about who could have done this?
one of the officers asked.
The cleaning lady didn’t have to think an all about that answer. There was one of his students,
she said in a low voice.
"What about him, since we’re talking about one of
