Scent of the Böggel-Mann
The hammer came down and the Lot was mine. I’d paid more than I’d intended, but not by too much. Tea-chests and shipping trunks often yielded a good assortment of knick-knacks for Ebay and car-boots, as well the occasional gem for an antiques’ shop. It was surprising what previous owners of these dowdy country mansions had hidden from view in their cellars and attics, what current owners couldn’t be bothered to rake through, or auctioneers to fully check.
My prized find had been a couple of years ago, a set of 18th century books. Some of the pages were foxed beyond redemption, but most of the illustrations were clean and they turned out to have been hand-painted in Germany. The proceeds had paid two months’ rent and taken us on holiday.
That was the point when Gary had stopped complaining about me not having a proper job and started to take an interest. He preferred the small stuff. Raking in a hundred quid while sitting beside the car in the sunshine with a tin of beer in his hand suited him down to the ground. Of course, he always seemed to be busy on showery days, and what do you do with a mass of wet paraphernalia on an open table? It took longer to dry it out than it did to set up shop. And how many punters wanted to wander round a muddy field in the rain? A waste of petrol to get there.
I liked auctions. They were a good day out. I got to see some amazing china, even if most of it was out of my price range. I’d sigh over the sheen of a Georgian mahogany table or lady’s writing desk, but I’d faced facts long ago:
