IN THE BEGINNING THERE WAS YARN
I’ve been writing a yarn bombing blog, yarn-bombing.com, for several years now and this is my second book on the subject. Before we dive on in with our knitting needles, crochet hooks and fluffy balls of yarn, I would like to present a brief retrospective on the evolution of yarn bombing in recent years.
Yarn bombing was originally considered as a form of anarchic craft that brought together traditional knitting and crochet crafts with street art in a tantalising, almost sacrilegious alliance. As yarn bombing has become more visible and popularised it has become apparent that it appeals to a cross section of society in an unexpected way. Of course, like so many alternative movements, the mainstream media eventually caught on to the movement and it has now been featured in a Target television commercial and an episode of the sitcom 2 Broke Girls.
Yarn bombing is the art or folly of adorning inanimate and often pedestrian objects, such as trees, statues, poles, trees, benches, bikes, or sculptures with yarn in any form, whether it be with pieces of knitting, crochet, macrame, cross stitch, finger knitting or even lace doilies and pieces of old jumpers and scarves.
Poles, lamp posts, street signs and trees are popular
