About this ebook

In her studies, Ennacas has learned that Tratchars were once the most feared warriors. She wants to know why and there is one Elf she can turn to for answers. As an ancient, Rothliel was fully trained to serve the Empire as a Tratchar Warrior. At her request, he will share the knowledge that has been lost to those who share their talents. Only one Tratchar cannot attend his classes, Endiku, for the war in the Free Lands, where he lives, has not abated.

The order of the Great Guardian of the Free Lands to bring Ennacas leaves Endiku no choice but to face his Life Mate, for The Great Guardian has a quest for them that will take their combined talents to complete. When the time comes for him to collect his bride, he is apprehensive. He has not spoken to her for centuries and is unsure of his welcome. She is a woman now, and there is nothing more dangerous than a female who feels she has been taken for granted, especially one who is a Tratchar and an Eagle Claw.

I don’t really know what to say about myself.I have been writing books since before I became a teenager. Most are still hidden in the closet. I used to make up my own stories as a child, everyone used to act them out while we were playing outside. As a teenager someone issued me a challenge. I told her that her stories stunk, she told me to do better. My job growing up was to play guardian to my little brother, keep him safe. That meant I ended up getting into more fights than enough – makes sense now that I write about warriors. My family will try to tell you that I’m not innocent, I have a personality that keeps them on their toes. Over my lifetime and theirs I have earn several nicknames – The Godmother, The Evil Christmas Elf (comes from making my nieces wrap their own Christmas presents), Mistress of Ambush. My favorite response to them when they try to get me into trouble is just to look at them with a wide doe eyed expression and say “Moi?????”I have a seal point Siamese cat named Snoop, named after my favorite cartoon character and hobby. I have a “healthy” but small collection of Snoopy memorabilia. He is a character alright; never met a cat who can talk back like he does. He expects daily dosages of adoration on his schedule when he wants it – not when it’s convenient for me and he HATES snow.I come from a very large family (mostly brothers) and I could outrun the whole works of them (I’m the shortest!). It was called survival. This book has been in the making for a long time now. Over a half a year to write it, about the same amount of time to edit it, and probably about the same amount of time to get the art work and website! I have learned you can’t control the timelines of other people – Murphy likes to step in.So for now I am setting up good luck charms everywhere... didn’t know I had that many stuffed Snoopy’s. *Fingers, legs, toes, eyes and anything else I can crossed*

    Tratchars - M.A. Abraham

    CHAPTER I

That is the stupidest idea you have ever had. Eärwen addressed Ennacas with open disgust, as she watched her sister dress before her mirror.

As if I care what you think. Ennacas snipped back.

You are going to get yourself in a lot of trouble. Eärwen warned.

Only if you tell, and if I find out you breathed a word of this to anyone, I will beat you until you bleed. Ennacas threatened.

Eärwen laughed aloud as she popped a couple of grapes into her mouth and chewed. Ennacas had been issuing threats at her for the past ten years without any repercussions. She wasn’t worried that it would change now. Besides, if Ennacas ever decided to tackle her, she would be in for a bit of a surprise. She wasn’t confident about her ability to keep herself safe without a reason. There were a few Elves in her classes she might be afraid to tangle with, but there weren’t many.

Eärwen watched as Ennacas donned an outfit she considered unfit to be seen in public with and frowned as she munched on the last of her grapes. She sighed as she transferred her attention to the empty bowl on her lap then stole a quick peek at Ennacas to see whether she was paying any attention to anything but herself. She wasn’t, so she quickly checked to see how many grapes were left in her sister’s bowl; it was almost full. She slowly exchanged the bowls while her sister was otherwise occupied. Surely, Ennacas wouldn’t miss a few grapes.

I am surprised Aunt Arazel borrowed you her costume. Eärwen spoke more to direct Ennacas’ attention away from the filched grapes than anything else.

Ennacas didn’t notice a thing as she tossed Eärwen a quick warning glance before threatening her. Aunt Arazel better not hear about my wearing it either.

Eärwen froze with a grape hovering in her fingers halfway to her mouth as she gaped at Ennacas. Tell me you didn’t do what I think you did!

None of your business what I did or didn’t do. Ennacas sniffed as she tugged the outfit into place and smoothed it over her figure before checking her reflection in the mirror with smug satisfaction.

Arazel wouldn’t miss her old uniform, Ennacas was sure of it. None of the Dark Elven women who had married into the family ever wore them any more, nor had they worn them for years. She considered that a waste. She knew how to put them to good use though. Amy, Angel and herself had planned this particular afternoon out carefully. This was the day they were going to experiment with what it would feel like to be with a man. Today they would leave their childhood behind to become women and they had found the perfect men to teach them everything they wanted to know, maybe even a bit more.

Ennacas turned to pick up her bowl of grapes and noticed it was empty. She immediately knew who to blame.

Those were my grapes, you miserable thief.

Prove it. Eärwen replied as she casually peeled the skin off the last one and slowly pushed it into her mouth.

You’re a dead Elf. Ennacas declared as she narrowed her eyes and watched Eärwen slowly lick her fingers.

I know, Eärwen answered as she rolled her eyes at her sister. And you will plant flowers on my grave.

Thorn bushes more likely or you might come back, like some misguided Demon. Ennacas hissed.

Temper, temper sister. Eärwen replied with a grin. If you start screeching, mom or dad will come to see what is going on. I am sure that wouldn’t suit your purpose. You wouldn’t want either of them catching you dressed like that. Dad would know where you got the uniform from immediately and mom would have you washing off Sentinel roots for a month for daring to wear one of them.

Ennacas stopped short of slapping her sister, as she considered the consequences of her actions. Eärwen had a point. Their parents would throw a fit if they saw her in one of Arazel’s old Elite Guard uniforms. They would want to know where she got it and how. She didn’t need any of that coming to light because that would get more people than she wanted to think about in trouble. She could only begin to guess at some of the things Aunt Arazel would do to them for touching her prize costume. So, instead of attacking her sister, she threw the cape she had draped over the end of her bed to wear around her shoulders to hide her attire and left to meet up with her friends.

Did you wear it? Amy whispered as Ennacas met her and Angel on the path leading to the pond.

Ennacas nodded and removed the cape as she folded it over her arm. She almost laughed at the sight and sound of Amy whispering. Amy sounded scared and shaky. Angel remained silent, but her eyes shifted nervously from place to place as if she was afraid someone would notice them. She hoped they did. That was what this was supposed to be all about.

Are you two going to remove your capes, or did you chicken out? Ennacas prodded.

Deep inside, Ennacas wasn’t feeling any braver than Amy or Angel, but she wasn’t going to let them know that. She was an Eagle Claw and an Eagle Claw never retreated. By the time the three girls reached the place where they were supposed to meet the men, she wasn’t so sure she was doing the smart thing and was half considering a tactical retreat despite being her father’s daughter. She quickly pushed the thought aside. She was determined to go through with their plans. She was sixteen now; a woman, not a baby like Eärwen.

Ennacas thought about the men who would be waiting for them by the pond. They hadn’t known them long. They weren’t even from Daroth’s Kingdom. One Elf was a Grey Elf and the others were Dark Elves. None were over two hundred, so they were young as well. The men had no idea who they were, nor did they know how young they were. Ennacas had a feeling they might have objected to the meeting if they knew. She knew girls who talked about doing the things they were, but none were Light Elves. She personally couldn’t see the difference.

The young male Elves exchanged grins as they noticed the three girls and waved from where they waited. They had chosen a secluded area by a small pool of water where they would frolic in the pond while everyone got used to the idea of what was about to happen. They had realized earlier that the young ladies didn’t have much experience, but they were sure that what they lacked in that way would be more than made up for by their enthusiasm. It usually was, and they were looking forward to an afternoon filled with pleasure and passion.

    CHAPTER II

Endiku, Gabriel greeted him with a welcoming smile, as he walked through the door.

Endiku returned the salutation as he looked over the members of the family and noted Ennacas missing. I thought I would pay everyone a surprise visit. Where is Ennacas? I have a small gift for her.

Probably with Amy and Angel. Eden answered.

I will get her. Eärwen volunteered as she jumped to her feet.

Eden and Gabriel exchanged a puzzled look when Eärwen offered to fetch her sister. They had a feeling something was off. To begin with, Eärwen never went after Ennacas and why was she looking so pale suddenly? Ennacas was obviously up to something and Eärwen wasn’t telling. This was something that needed checking into.

Eärwen, sit down and finish your meal. We can find Ennacas without you. Eden replied.

Eärwen slowly sank into her chair as she heaved a sigh of resignation. She had a feeling she was going to be in as much trouble as Ennacas because she didn’t snitch on her. Endiku’s arrival was something she didn’t know what to do about. If she tried to use the leaves to send her sister a message their mother would catch on immediately. She wondered what her punishment was going to be this time.

I will find her, Endiku assured Eärwen.

Eärwen could have groaned her dismay aloud. This was far worse than anything she could have imagined.

Endiku cast his net to locate Ennacas the moment he offered, but he didn’t expect the response he got through the leaves. He thought there would be three body signatures brought back and the girls would be playing some kind of teenage game. Instead he received six signatures, three female and three male, and they all seemed to be in a slightly stimulated state. It didn’t take him long to figure out what was happening.

I will be right back. Endiku’s voice was clipped, and his face was red with anger.

Endiku turned and stormed out of the house. There was no sign of the good mood he had arrived in when he raced down the stairs that led to the forest floor. He was in a rage.

Eärwen sat in her place at the table and trembled, as all the color in her face finished leaching out. What was she going to do? She looked around and noticed how everyone seemed to focus on her, as if they were waiting for her to talk. She didn’t say a word.

    Eärwen, Eden addressed her.

Yes mom? Eärwen managed to force out an answer.

I believe you have something to tell us about your sister, don’t you? Eden gave her the chance to tell them what was going on.

Eärwen couldn’t see where she had a choice. If Endiku could tell what was going on in their forest, she had no hope of hiding the news from her family. She slowly nodded as she replied.

Ennacas was dressed in Aunt Arazel’s old uniform when she left. She was headed off to meet with some friends to celebrate her sixteenth birthday.

How did Ennacas get Arazel’s old uniform? Gabriel wondered.

Eärwen didn’t know that answer, well not really, so she shrugged by way of answering.

Your sister made you promise not to tell on her, didn’t she? Gabriel pressed harder.

Eärwen nodded and Eden sighed in disappointment. We are going to have a little chat after this is over. For now, I suggest we finish our meal before we go down to the forest floor to meet Endiku and Ennacas. Something tells me we are not going to be happy with our daughter.

I want to know what Ennacas is up to. Eden, what does the forest say about our daughter’s activities? Gabriel asked.

Gabriel decided he wasn’t about to handle the subject in a subtle manner. They were amongst family, and this was a family matter. There were no secrets so horrible that they should be hidden from siblings or parents. Family was about pulling together and dealing with life as a unit. If Ennacas was doing something that would reflect badly on them, it needed to be brought to light so they knew about it. He had been tempted to go with Endiku when he had stormed off after Ennacas, but he had refrained from doing so, because he could tell that whatever Endiku had sensed it was something that reached out to touch the inner instincts of her Life Mate.

Eden stretched out her Tratchar powers to try to read the secrets the forest would reveal about their daughter and came up empty. Ennacas had blocked her. Had she blocked the others? She turned to Galador with an enquiring look, knowing he would catch her meaning.

Ennacas has me blocked, can you read her?

Even as young as he was, Galador’s Tratchar powers were almost as strong as Eden’s. He reached out to touch his sister and found that she also had him blocked. When he looked at Timorean he realized that his brother knew no one would find out any information about her. Timorean’s words confirmed it.

Ennacas has blocked us all with a powerful spell. The only reason Endiku got through was because she didn’t expect him to be here, so she didn’t include him in the casting.

That means that whatever she is up to she knows is wrong. Jerrol spoke.

Gildren remained silent, but the look on his face spoke volumes. He didn’t care what it took, he was going to have words with his sister, even after punishment had been issued. He was tired of Ennacas making life uncomfortable for the rest of the family. They were always getting blamed for things she did and Eärwen often got into the most trouble for covering for her, even when she didn’t know much more than anyone else. This was a prime example of that, because he knew Eärwen would be penalized for not telling their parents about Ennacas’ latest mess. It was time to put their house in order and he was just the Elf to do it.

Finish your meal, Gabriel ordered his children, as he took his place at the head of the table.

Food did not go to waste in the Eagle Claw household and this was one of those times when it was going to need to be forced down. The boys ate quickly and in silence. They exchanged looks that meant there would be a meeting when the meal was over, or after Ennacas came home. She was not getting away with whatever she was doing this time. Especially if it was something bad enough to drive her Life Mate into a killing rage.

Eärwen ate slowly as she forced her food past the lump that blocked the passageway in her throat. Ennacas was in trouble and it was her fault. She might not have known exactly what her sister was up to, but that was no excuse. She had still known that her parents should have been warned. If they would have been aware of the problem maybe Ennacas wouldn’t have taken things so far and Endiku wouldn’t be so angry.

To be fair, Eärwen hadn’t believed Ennacas was up to much more than showing off. Her sister was often impulsive and prone to displays of vanity. Ennacas was a very pretty girl and she liked how the male members of the community seemed to appreciate the fact. She was also at an age to flaunt her looks. She wasn’t the only girl who did that, most of the girls her age did.

Eden and Gabriel watched Eärwen closer than they did their sons, because they had a good idea what was going through the boys’ minds. It was common for brothers to take their sisters to task when the girls did something foolish or downright stupid. In this case, they had a feeling Ennacas’ brothers were going to come down hard on her and perhaps it was past time they did as well. The degree of punishment, however, would have to be determined by what she was doing and her reaction to getting caught. As soon as their younger daughter was finished with her meal, they cleared the table together before setting their next plan of action into motion.

    Eärwen, follow us. Eden ordered.

The boys exchanged glances. They hadn’t expected to be left out of this process and none of them appeared to be very happy about it. They wanted to know what was happening between their parents and Eärwen. They wanted to know how harshly Eärwen was going to be punished for her silence. That was the one thing everyone knew about Eärwen. She didn’t share secrets, unless it was about something that could get someone hurt.

As soon as Eden closed the door of their room she sealed the area so none of her sons could hear what was going on. She knew her children well enough to realize they were apt to use their powers to eavesdrop. She was surprised when Gabriel doubled the seal using his own talents. When she raised an enquiring eyebrow at him he tossed her a grin and replied.

You think only our Tratchar sons will be curious about this?

Eden shook her head as she grinned back at him and motioned for Eärwen to sit on the edge of their bed. The questioning then began in earnest.

So beyond wearing a uniform she had no right to have or wear, and flaunting her charms for everyone to see, what else is Ennacas up to?

I don’t know. Eärwen answered honestly, as she began to cry. She doesn’t confide in me. I thought she was going to go somewhere to showoff.

In her Aunt’s uniform? Gabriel could barely believe Ennacas could be so stupid. If Arazel got wind of the news that Ennacas had stolen her Elite Guard uniform there would be fur flying in every direction.

I never said I thought she was being smart. Eärwen answered.

It wasn’t the right thing to say because Eden didn’t appreciate the humor under the circumstances and neither did Gabriel. He was just a little slower to react to it.

Did it occur to you that you might have been able to talk some sense into your sister?

Ennacas never listens to me, Eärwen replied, as the tears seemed to fall harder. I quit trying to tell her anything years ago.

We know there has been problems, but we didn’t think it was anything more than sibling rivalry. Eden admitted. Why haven’t you mentioned anything?

I tried. Eärwen complained. You both said she would grow out of it.

Gabriel and Eden hated to admit it, but now that Eärwen mentioned the conversation, they did have a vague recollection of her mentioning something once, and then the matter never came up again and was forgotten.

That was years ago. Gabriel pointed out.

Eärwen shrugged as she answered. I didn’t think bringing up the matter repeatedly would resolve anything.

Unfortunately, Gabriel and Eden had to agree. Part of the problem had been caused by their inattention. They had assumed Ennacas would mature in time and had shrugged the matter aside without realizing that Ennacas’ actions had been steadily spiraling out of control. The worse part was they realized that to get their daughter back on track now, they were going to have to deal very harshly with her. She was going to fight them on this, which meant there was going to be a major battle going on in their home for a while. The battle they could handle, but they worried how it would affect the rest of the family.

    CHAPTER III

Do you boys have a death wish, or are you just stupid? Endiku asked, as he stood overseeing the actions of the young men by the pool.

When Endiku had burst out of the trees, moments before, he had taken a few moments to get his temper under control. He had been livid and the scene before him didn’t help. These three couples had decided to make this beautiful spot into an area for a tryst, and he considered it a sacrilege, under the circumstances. The three girls were in various stages of undress and the young men weren’t much better, both genders were so involved with what they were doing that none of them noticed when he appeared, despite the noise he made. He was about to fix that shortly, preferably before he killed someone.

Endiku! Ennacas squeaked as she heard his voice.

    Yes, Endiku. He mocked her.

It wasn’t only the male Elves he was angry with. The girls were just as guilty, although they didn’t know what they were actually getting involved with.

The Grey Elf who was with Ennacas froze, then snarled at Endiku, as he noticed he was alone. He didn’t fear any Elf who was stupid enough to challenge three others without backup.

I should ask you the same question. What gives you the right to think you can interfere?

Maybe it has something to do with my Life Mate, the one who you are currently groping in front of my eyes. Endiku answered drily. And I would suggest you get your hands out from under what she has on for clothing before you lose them.

The moment the Grey Elf heard the words Life Mate, he had second thoughts about challenging the man. In a matter such as this he was in the right, and they were in danger of being forced to deal with a very volatile situation. Life Mates were very touchy about their partners.

I thought she was too young for a Life Mate. The Grey Elf answered, as he took his hands off Ennacas and moved away from her.

She is, which is why we are waiting until she grows up. In the meantime, her parents are going to want to have a talk with her. Endiku’s voice sounded clipped and gave full warning of a control barely leashed.

The Dark Elves had dismissed Endiku the moment they noticed that he was focused on the Grey Elf. They turned their attentions back onto Amy and Angel, despite the two girls not being very interested in carrying on where they had left off. The men weren’t paying their objections much attention and, when they grew vocal, Endiku shifted his attention to them for a moment.

I suggest you leave General Larek’s daughters go free before their father hears about this. If he does, you better hope some nomadic desert Elves take pity on you and allow you asylum, because Tratchar Eden is their aunt and between Gabriel, Larek and her, they will hunt you down. I would wager it wouldn’t take much for them to talk King Liessen into helping hold you down while their mother, Haylo, removes that part of your anatomy that you consider very precious.

That little speech caught the Dark Elves attention and Endiku started hearing names being branded about as the young men looked at the girls they were currently holding down with suspicion.

They are related to General Eagle Claw? One of the Dark Elves asked.

Endiku grinned widely as his face took on an evil look. Nothing more needed to be said as all three male Elves ran from the area.

As the young male Elves sprinted off, Amy, Angel and Ennacas rose and started to straighten up their clothing. Endiku was quick to bring that to a stop, as he sent Eden a very quick message through the trees, before turning his attention back to the girls.

No ladies, you are not to touch a thing. In fact, you are going to face your parents just the way you are. I suggest you start walking. I will follow to make sure you arrive in the same state as I found you here.

Amy and Angel immediately burst into tears. This wasn’t the way things were supposed to have happened. In fact, nothing had gone according to plan and they hadn’t found anything to recommend about the experience to consider trying it again. It was going to be a very long time before they thought about doing anything remotely familiar again. In the meantime, they were not looking forward to facing their parents, wearing their aunt’s uniforms, or rather only half wearing the uniforms.

Ennacas was terrified, but she wasn’t about to back down. Not from anyone. Not even from Endiku. Her parents, she felt, she could handle. She raised her chin at Endiku defiantly and challenged his right to interfere in her life.

Who gave you the right to decide who I allow to be with me? I don’t remember agreeing to accept you for a Life Mate.

Endiku looked at Ennacas with a degree of contempt and sneered as he commented.

Consider yourself lucky I am still of a mind to acknowledge the bond. A part of me is calling me a fool for not breaking this bond myself and yes, it has been known to happen, but rarely. If you want to know more about it, I suggest you do some research. You do know how to read, don’t you?

How dare you? Ennacas gasped before charging Endiku with her fingers curled, as she reached to rake his face with her fingernails.

Endiku sidestepped her attack at the last moment and allowed her to sail past him. When she turned on him again, he tripped her, before grabbing her by the collar at the nape of her neck to literally drag her on the ground as he headed for her home. Amy and Angel walked in front of him and tried to hide the parts of their bodies not covered by the uniform.

When Endiku got close to Gabriel and Eden’s Sentinel home, he noticed the small gathering of Elves waiting for him.

General Larek, Healer Haylo. I believe these two are your daughters.

Larek took one look at his girls and turned red with indignation. Haylo looked mortified. Their sons couldn’t believe what they were seeing. Amy and Angel weren’t able to cover enough of the damage done to their state of dress to hide the marks left of their bodies by the male Elves. It was obvious what they had been doing, and in their Aunts uniforms. They were dead Elves, or worse.

Home. Larek ground out between clenched teeth and both girls rushed to their mother.

Haylo was angrier than she had ever been in her entire life. How dare her daughters dress like this? They had a lot to atone to their aunts for, and to make things worse, they had come back almost naked, with signs of men having touched them. That was more than she could accept from her girls. As soon as they reached for her, she stepped back then delivered a stinging slap to each one.

Don’t even think of touching me until you have had a bath, and even then I will have to think about it. You are a disgrace. Do as your father told you. Get home. We will deal with both of you there. Gabriel and Eden have their own problem.

Ennacas could hear the contempt her Aunt Haylo held at bay in her voice and knew a part of it was for her. It hurt, but she refused to show it. She got up from the ground, to attack Endiku again, but before she could, he grabbed her by the arm and pushed her back down. She landed at the feet
