Chapter One - The New Age Movement (the NAM)
This spiritual or religious movement is a modern revival of a combination of ancient religious, traditions and practices. The movement gets its name from the belief in the emergence of the "Age of Aquarius". In addition to ancient influences the NAM is rooted in the counterculture movement of the 1960's.
It is hard to get an estimate of New Age membership since it encompasses so many belief systems (such as reincarnation, transcendental meditation, the occult, etc.). In America alone it is estimated that 10,000,000 people believe in or practice the NAM in one way or another. However, when you add related beliefs such as in reincarnation, transcendental meditation, Far Eastern beliefs in the USA and the world; then the global membership is believed to be much, much greater. For brevity purposes, in this book I refer to the New Age Movement as the NAM.
Most New Age groups subscribe to the view that there is an Ultimate Source
from which all things originate. Since it does not subscribe to a firm set of beliefs, there are many contradictions between this movement's beliefs and the belief of its followers. For example while some believe that an Ultimate Source
came to create the universe and everything in it, other New Agers believe in a universal inter-relatedness that is not always emanating from a single source. And yet these opposing beliefs both fit into the NAM dogma! The New Age worldview embraces holism; the idea that everything in existence is intricately connected and part of a single source or whole.
A common belief among the New Age movement is that mankind has or will soon enter, a new age known as the Age of Aquarius, whereby man will finally come to embrace love, joy, peace, abundance, and harmony among peoples and nations; the Golden Age of man.
The New Age Movement is all about man achieving godhood without God (the Genesis Ch. 3 lie). So at the core of the NAM is faith in and worship of self (void of God). They claim that man can achieve this godhood
by harnessing the all-pervasive life force that exists in the cosmos.
Origin of NAM
In the late 19th century Helena Petrovna Blavatsky, cofounder of the Theosophical Society, announced a coming New Age. She believed that Buddhism and related reincarnation based beliefs could bring about communion with Ascended Masters
and advance the human race. Her ideas helped foment the New Age concept.
In the 1940s Alice A. Bailey, founder of the Arcane School (an organization that disseminated spiritual teachings) and member of the Theosophical Society, has been credited with laying the foundation for the NAM and is regarded as its "high priestess". She suggested that a new messiah, the "Master Maitreya", would appear in the last quarter of the 20th century. She popularized meditation as a method to receive divine energy
from Maitreya, thus raising the general level of spiritual awareness among its practitioners. These groups would later claim the ability to transmit spiritual energy to the world; that they would receive from the Ascended Masters
. While the later may remain to be realized, the Master Maitreya
did fail to appear in the latter part of the 20th Century, nor in the early part of the 21st Century. Perhaps he is waiting for more "divine energy" to manifest!
As expectations of a New Age experience increased in the 1960s, a new organization, the Universal Foundation, emerged. Its leader, Anthony Brooke, predicted that an apocalyptic event would occur during the Christmas season of 1967. This also failed to materialize. Nevertheless a newfound interest in the movement exploded and a global network of New Age groups emerged.
Then In 1970 David Spangler solidified the concept of the New Age movement, with a belief that the release of new waves of spiritual energy were activated by certain astrological changes; namely the movement of the Earth into the Age of Aquarius. Spangler’s perspective differed from his predecessors in that the New Age movement (NAM) now demanded an active response from its members; thus shifting the responsibility for the arrival of the New Age on the shoulders of those who believed in it. He also authored the book Revelation: The Birth of a New Age
(1976); which increased interest in the NAM.
