By Father Axel

About this ebook
The legendary EIGHT IMMORTALS of Taoism come to life in this latest book by Fr.Axel. He narrates for the first time the COMPLETE story behind the most beloved Saints of Chinese ritual and popular culture. The author shares with us magic tales of love, loyalty, adventure and transcendence. The Eight Lucky Saints are a merry gang of Realized People. They appear to the bourgeoisie as being crazy, perverted, and completely freaked out. Centuries before Haight-Ashbury and the Doors, the 8 Immortals were the first hippies of the Taoist counterculture. They are hard on criminals, but soft on the underdog. Like Chinese Robin Hoods, they take from the rich and distribute freely to the poor. Their very actions and philsophy are a WAY to free the individual from a suppressive government and society. Each of the Transcendents carries with him/her a special magic tool. This tool can heal and resurrect the dead. Worshipping the Eight Immortals is an integral part of Folk-Taoism in China and its diaspora.

THE HEART OF TAO SYSTEM
INTRODUCTION
It is with great pleasure and contentment, that I am writing this book. Being a ordained Taoist Priest, I come from a ancient lineage of Taoist Masters. Our association dates back to the original Eight Lucky Saints Temple八仙庵in Western Tranquility City西安市, Western Father Protecting Province陝西省. Political reasons prohibited my ordination at a Taoist Temple, thus I received my premiere hallowing as a Priest in a friendly, serene, widespread and affluent Buddhist Temple in Southern China. I still cherish that treasured picture, surrounded by dozens of unbelieving Chinese merchants, salesgirls, octogenarians, kids, dogs and my Venerable Teacher, GrandMaster Wong Seng Tian, putting the Yellow Taoist Robe and Fish Hat on my head. Imagine a gwailo becoming a Taoist Priest in Southern China.
Occasionally, when GrandMaster Wong and I celebrated Holy Mass, devotees could see flashes and apparitions of one of the 8 Immortals outside in the Temple courtyard or emerging from the igniting mass of joss sticks.
The Eight Immortals八仙 are a merry gang of Taoist Realized People. In the eyes of the Chinese bourgeoisie they appear wilde, crazy, perverted and eccentric. Alas; they are just hippies - centuries before Haight - Ashbury and the Doors. They are cruel to criminals - but they have a golden heart for the underdog. They take money from the rich and distribute it freely to the poor, like some Chinese Robin Hoods.
Each one of them carries with him/her a specialized Power Tool法器. The individual power tool - which contains the Super Powers of the Immortal - is able to resurrect people from the dead. It is also enabled to exorcize Evil Spirits and Demons. Taken alone, these tools represent 8 robotic 'Covert Eight Immortals'暗八仙, which can act independently of its model owner. They are animated by Spiritual Winds and can think for themselves.
The tales here - presented for the first time in their complete form - are directed at achieving TAO. To be freed from the suppressive organization of government and a restrictive society. For us modern people, with different post - industrious alternative cultures, these Tales of Liberation are not as shocking as they were for those Chinese centuries ago. The counter - culture movement of the Bay Area, Esalen and Greenwich Village, has left its indelible mark on our contemporary bio - organic - food and New Age industry, which also serves up 'Taoist Health Sex Union' seminars.
It was exactly 20 years ago, when I began my apprenticeship as a Taoist neophyte. I never would have imagined, what adventures and strange people lay in store for me, in that mysterious Taoist Temple; devoted to the Eight Immortals of Taoism. Down there at the end of the world.

A MYSTERIOUS LIGHT
Once upon a time, there appeared in the hour of the RAT, a mysterious radiance. It hovered over the mansion of a wealthy merchant. His name was Open Up Heavenly Accomplishment张天成. For years, he and his beloved wife had tried in vain to conceive a child. Their pleas to the Gods did not go unheard. The clan members and their relatives were worried, that Merchant Open Up would never receive a son, who would become his successor. He was already 42 years old.
For 333 days, the Merchant's wife lay in pregnancy. Then, when the radiant sphere of Divine Announcement apperared over the mansion, she finally gave birth to a strapping baby boy. He was born direcly from the womb into the bedroom. He stood erect in the bedchambre and said: "Don't worry, Dear Mother. The Jade Emperor has sent me to you, to make you and the family happy by Orthodox Approximation of TAO正果. My name is Open Up the Fruit张果. I was formed from Ethereal Energies醚炁 to deliver mankind from misery. I learned to retain my life force through holding my Golden Boy urine金黄童子憋.'' His well - formed face shone in Heavenly Light of Annunciation of TAO道天使报喜. His broad forehead promised intelligence and benevolence仁德.His body and limbs were perfect. His bearing was erect and commanding. His mother was overjoyed, as well as her husband. Finally, after 24 years of unsuccessful sexual intercourse, a son was finally born to the Open Up family. The clan was happy, even those malicious gossiping neighbours.
A WITCH APPEARS
Little Open Up could read and write Chinese characters from the first day. He studied many books about life and the Middle Kingdom, to familiarize himself with the world of today and its people. He did so for 10 years. On his 10th birthday, there was a knock on the heavy door of the Open Up family mansion. Some ugly, old Madame called Knowing Well Favour通惠 stood in the entrance hall. She claimed to be a Taoist Hermitesse. She was sent by TAO to Open Up family to claim the boy for further education. Soon to be instructed by her into Taoist Sciences. The obnoxious neighbours, when they saw that old hag commented on the spot: ''Look there! That old witch. She has surely come to curse that Open Up family. Serves them right. Those stuck - ups!'' The Mother of Little Open Up became frightened and devastated about this claim: ''How dare you, intrude into our family and intend to steal our sweet boy? Begone from our premises, you, you - Witch巫婆!'' She wrapped her motherly arms protectively around the shoulders of Little Open Up. His eyes became very big, watching the invading Hermitesse.
THE TALE OF THE TAOTESSE
The Taotesse Knowing Well Favour sighed, nodded in understanding and began her astonishing tale of the Heavenly and the Supernatural志怪:
''Your son Open Up was born in the begin of time as a nameless Spiritual Rat精神老鼠. He cultivated his rattish mind and body for countless aeons. His goal was to become a human being. Alas; it was not sufficient to achieve human sphere power. He could not become a human being. Too much was still missing in his education towards humanhood. It happened in Hokkien福建, in Irrigation Mouth City灌口邑, in prehistoric times, during the reign of the 3 Souvereigns and 5 Emperors三皇五帝. The Imperial Scaly Dragon蛟龙 was angered by some greedy landlords. They had stirred up the sea, causing the dinosaur monstre to turn against the people.
The Rat Spirit said: "If I help the good citizens of Irrigation Mouth City, I will achieve Merit功 in TAO. Perhaps, this will bring me nearer towards a promotion. Of becoming humanized. Thus the Rat Spirit saved many people from drowning in the unrushing waters. He brought them to safety onatop a mountain.
THE LUCKY BAT
But the Rat's rescue operations were observed by the enlightened Tao Realized Man文美真人. He wondered: "Why is this Rat Spirit so persistent in achievieng TAO? I will reward this Rat Spirit老鼠 and transmorph it into a Lucky Bat心灵上蝠.'' The Realized Master in TAO then took the little Bat into his services. ''When I can teach this Bat the WAY, perchance it will improve on his road to become a human being.'' After aeons of diligent service to the Tao Realized Man, the little Bat became such a kind animal, that the citizens of Irrigation Mouth City erected a temple in his honour. ''Alas'', the Bat sighed, ''I'm still not nearer to my goal of transcendence into humanhood.''
A BAT AND DRAGON FIGHT
The defeated Imperial Scaly Dragon still simmered and brooded revenge upon little felicituous Bat. Full of hatred and ill - will, he snorted: ''Now that little upstart thinks, he's made it. With that fancy temple and such. But - I will be victorious in the end. I am going to destroy that shitty temple!'' Thus spake the Dragon King and laid waste to the temple by causing a deluge upon the unprepared city. After the flood receded, the little temple lay in ruins.
Upon hearing of the destruction of the temple, the brave fighting Bat attacked the Scaly Dragon in his undersea lair. They fought ferociously, and the Bat this time remained victorious. He flew up and grabbed a mountain, which was in the way of irrigating the fields: And dropped it from a great height onatop the Dragon. The Scaly Dragon was crushed underneath, like the lowliest of venom - ous insects.
