Celebrating Taoist Festivals
By Father Axel

About this ebook
CELEBRATING TAOIST FESTIVALS is Fr.Axel's latest addition to his growing list of Taoist publications. Follow the author through the ANNUAL LITURGICAL CYCLE. A swirl of faith, colours and magic across the 12 LUNAR MONTHS of Han-Chinese's deepest beliefs.
The Taoist Ritual Calendar is as colourful as the Catholic/Orthodox spiritual docket. It centers around TAO, being the source and engine of the Liturgical Year. Like the Roman-Catholic and Greek-Orthodox celebrate the resurrection of Christ at Easter, so the Chinese people rekindle their defunct Yang Chi on New Year's Day.
Fr.Axel takes the reader on a journey, from light into darkness and back again. Like the emerging Sun - which gives us hope during CNY - soon losing its power as a lighthouse, over the upcoming months. Perusing this book as a manual of the only indigenous High-Religion of China, the reader rides on the heavenly chariot of waxing and waning Yin and Yang of the agricultural Middle Kingdom and its diaspora. Like the seeds planted by the farmer and the ensuing reaping of harvest, so the faithful find spiritual sustenance in the rituals of the Taoist Faith.
The first part deals with the overall pattern of the Liturgical Year. In the second part are described in detail the Taoist Gods and Saints, who descend from Heaven into the ritual area. The author also narrates the lifestories of those Exalted Beings.
It is the intention of Fr.Axel, to introduce the reader to the splendour and magnificence of the Taoist Liturgical Year. He explains the foods, preparations, customs, sayings and symbolic meanings of Festivals. This book also commemorates Fr.Axel's 20th Anniversary as a Taoist in South-East Asia.

FINDING THE HEART OF TAO
Today we are living cold ashes of love.
In a world spiralling out of control: Chaos.
Heart of TAO (HOT) venerates
Lord Lao and the 8 Lucky Saints
as Spiritual Embodiments of the WAY.
Helping mankind overcoming Spiritual Death by
finding the Heart of TAO amongst the Stars.
HOT welcomes everybody,
irrespective of race or creed; who follows
the WAY of the HEART:
Taoist Traditions and the Liturgical Cycle of Festivals.
We feel alone and marooned in a uncaring hostile universe.
Thus HOT seeks overall dialogue with variant
Consciousnesses and religious Beliefs across One Cosmos.
We practice devotion through prayer,
distribution of oil, candles, incense, and Taoist Scriptures.
Keeping the Taoist Faith alive in the End of Times:
Amidst increasing human perversions and barbarism:
Transvaluation of Values.
HOT encourages Chaos:
Letting the 10 000 Things Go their Own Way.
Because Order can not be established in Order.
Because Chaos can not be established in Chaos.
Therefore Order must emerge from Creative Chaos.
Our past life is unredeemable: Black Time. Black Karma.
Thus HOT provides formulas and enlightened teachings
to achieve Spiritual Liberation in this lifetime.
Preparing to die today:
In order to live tomorrow.
We strive to put emphasis back into our HEART as the centre of wisdom:
Our Emotional Intelligence.
Developing our HEART:
To reach the ROSE GARDEN in HEAVEN.
Thus we meditate on the HOT Mandala:
Inner Pilgrimage to Holy Places.
Accumulating Personal Merit.
Assisting devotees to accumulate Merit.
HOT serves the community in achieving Spiritual Peace,
good fortune and improved health.
Forgiveness and Salvation are thus attainable for Everyone.
Every minute.
Within the pure Heart of TAO.

ABOUT FR.AXEL
THE HEART OF TAO SYSTEM
INTRODUCTION
The respectful interest for the traditions and customs of the Han Chinese has increased over the last decades. Suffering from neglect; through a attitude of Communist Party of China supremacy and arrogance. As well as Western Imperialism and decadence, there is slowly developing a more thorough understanding in Occident and Orient for spiritual Han Festivals.
As a ordained Taoist Priest in the II. Generation, I have conducted the Main Festivals described herein. Ministering mostly to Hokkienese, Hongkongese and local Filipinos. Being raised within the Taoist Ritual Mastery Tradition民间道教; 道法二門道壇. My daily spiritual services centered around the Eight Immortals八仙, Jade Emperor玉皇上帝 and Lord Lao太上老君 (Folk Taoism). My scholarly education comprised the basic writings of the Taoist Canon, however pitiful abbreviated the Hokkienese and Taiwanese excerpts turned out to be. My love belongs to the Highest Clarity texts上清派, 茅山宗; (with unimaginable debt to Professor Isabelle Robinet, for pointing out those texts and short summaries, exactly where to find the relevant scriptures amongst 5500 books; each tome the size of a record ledger).
To make it quite clear: Taoism is foremost a RELIGION, not some kind of philosophy. Every person (layman or priest), who practices this religion, is called a Taoist Gentleman/Priest道士 or a Taoist Nun道姑. That's it.
Concerning the inherent spirit and spark; of what drives the fuse of the Taoist Liturgy & Festival complex, one has only to watch the last remaining Stomping Out Evil傩仪/儺儀 (Nuo - Festivals) in Southern China, like Chang Chou City漳州市, also known as Narcissus City水仙花市, in Hokkien福建省. Those Exorcistic Festivals cum drama cum song cum public purification, are the shamanistic basement, upon which every Taoist Orthodoxy is based. Taoism, as the only indigenous High - Religion of China, owes everything to those local tribal organizations. Volunteers, who perform since millenniae those exorcistic rites under the guidance of the local Witch Doctor, who is called rightly (in his Lotus - Crown Hat青莲顶心, his Red Robe霞道袍 and Black Buffalo Horn犛水牛号角); the Master of the Ritual法師.
The Taoist Ritual Calendar is as colourful and as spiritual as the Catholic/Orthodox spiritual docket. It centers around TAO, being the source and engine of the liturgical year. Like the Roman - Catholic and Greek - Orthodox celebrate the resurrection of Christ at Easter, so the Chinese people rekindle their defunct Yang Winds on New Year's Day.
In this book, I want to introduce the reader to the splendour and magnificence of the Taoist Liturgical Year. I will also show the preparations, customs and obeisances of the people during those important times. This publication also celebrates my 20th anniversary as a Taoist in South-East Asia, becoming a acolyte in January 1996.
If you should have opportunity to visit San Francisco (or any other) Chinatown during CNY - do so. You will not be disappointed. There is much to learn from the Chinese.
MAY THE 8 LUCKY SAINTS BE WITH YOU!
Rev.Fr.Axel莲生法師

1. TAO IS A MILLSTONE
24 FORTNIGHTS二十四氣
The annual wheel of Taoist Festivals is based on the lunar calendar. (The same principle applies in calculating the Roman - Catholic/Greek - Orthodox Holy Days). The Taoist Celebrations follow the changes of TAO, as expressed in the waxing and waning of the Yin and Yang Winds blowing across the Pulsating Moon year.
The Lunar Year is divided into 24 Fortnights二十四氣, whereby each fortnight is made up of 15 consecutive days (24 x 15 = 360 days). Each Fortnight is further subdivided into 3 pentads候. The 24 fortnights are modeled after the agricultural year. They reflect the planting and harvesting of sustainable foods. Taoist Festivals are closely related to food and its consumption. As the food is distributed and dispersed amongst the faithful, so is the Yang Energy across the Liturgical Year. The cauldron in the centre of the temple, serves also in the function of a cooking pot: In which the food is prepared for devouring. Namely, the vapour of the ignited joss - sticks. Which feed the Gods above. Thus the congregation and the Gods are equally nourished over the ensuing Festival Cycle.
The waxing and waning of the Moon regulates the growth of nourishing plants. As well as the gestation cycles of domestic animals, foremost the pig, ox, chicken and marine life. The sea is even more controlled by lunar rhythms, as is evident in oyster farming and fishing. The power of herbal medicines is created by the augmenting moonbeams, not by the scorching heat of the sun alone. Thus Taoist pharmaceutical preparation is more of a Alchemy, mixing lunar and solar effluences in right measures: Empowering herbal concoctions. A principle forgotten in the West, since the advent of rational Enlightenment in the 18th century, with the occasional exception (Alexander von Bernus).
Approaching closure of the Liturgical Cycle, the male Energy supply is finally exhausted in December. Wintertime. All nourishing Yang Wind for the people has vanished - over a period of 24 Fortnights.
The Taoist Festival Cycle and the charging (and subsequent depletion) of nourishing Yang Winds over 24 Fortnights.

FESTIVAL CYCLE MATRIX
Let us have a look at the basic pattern which (like a spiritual fabric) holds together the different Main Taoist Festivals. This framework has been established since the Han Dynasty:
The sun travels from the EAST in the morning across the
