Keye and HER quest to the City of Light - inkdripper

Keye stood on the outskirts of her camp thinking for some time after Christian left. She began to remember the reasons she left the Proud Mountains to begin with and she began to cry. Keye looked back at the small group of people that had followed her because they believed she was their leader. She only sighed and wiped away her tears. Keye knew the road ahead of her was going to be difficult.

The villagers in this small band of people looked at Keye wondering what made her cry and they were excited about the fact that the Great King was real and they wanted to tell everyone they knew about him. A little boy came to Keye and tapped her on the knee and asked, When do we leave Keye?

Keye shrugged her shoulders and then said loudly, I am not your leader. The Great King is your leader. Now we all know he is real. Go wherever you must go and tell all our friends and family the truth about the Great King. You are free from me.

The tribe of people looked confused. They had been hanging on her every word for a very long time, and now Keye was telling them to go their own ways and then come to the City of Light. They all gathered their belongings and began to leave the camp quietly. Most of them went different directions. The only exception was one girl. Her name was Joy. She stayed close to Keye and looked at Keye’s sadness and frowned. Joy began to smile at Keye and said to her, Keye, why are you so sad? You know the Great King is real now! You know that we all know that too. You know how to get to the City of Light. What is making you so sad?

Keye looked at the little girl and gently said to her, Joy, I experienced a lot of pain in the Proud Mountains. I do want to go back and rescue all that I can, but Joy, I don’t know how to forget the reasons I left those mountains to begin with.

Joy ran to Keye and hugged her waist. Then she began to laugh and dance happily. Keye was confused by this. She said to Joy, Why are you so happy and where is your family?

Joy only laughed and smiled and said, Keye, my family died. I wandered into this camp a long time ago. It has been a safe place for me, and I have an important job to do. I am here for you Keye.

Keye looked at this little girl and shrugged and said, Well, ok then; gather whatever you need. Our travel is going to be rough into the mountains.

Joy happily grabbed her small bag of supplies and said excitedly, Ok, I’m ready! Let’s go!

Keye smiled at the girl and grabbed her own bag of supplies and began to walk toward the mountains. Joy followed Keye quite happily. Together Keye and Joy walked out of the camp and as they traveled farther and farther away the place of that camp literally could no longer be seen. Keye looked at this behind her shoulder and realized that she had had a great place to hide from the city.

The wind stirred a bit as the two traveled. Pretty soon it became quite cold. Keye shivered. Out of concern she looked at Joy. Joy happily hummed along as she walked with Keye. She didn’t even look cold, but Keye was concerned for her and asked her to stop for a minute and then grabbed a cloak from her own pack and put it around Joy. Joy just kept smiling and humming.

Keye was baffled by this child. She asked her, Why are you SO happy Joy? You lost your family, and you have no one to look after you!

Joy stopped smiling and looked at Keye sternly and said, Keye, I BELIEVE in the Great King and I know that I will see him in the City of Light. Nothing else matters! He is my hope and my future. I just don’t know the way to get to the City of Light without you! I need to stay with you Keye. Please take care of me until we get to the City of Light.

    Chapter 2

Keye looked at Joy and said to her, Joy I’m sorry. I don’t know how to take care of you. I was a child that ran away from the mountains when my mother and father died. I’m an orphan too!

Joy beamed her brightest smile and an actual light was around this little girl. She then responded to Keye and said, That’s EXACTLY why we need to be together! She looked around and just began to hum away.

Keye shrugged her shoulders in confusion but just sighed and continued on the trek with Joy happily walking beside her. After several hours of walking Keye asked Joy, Are you hungry? I sure am.

Joy smiled and said, Yes, I am hungry. Will we eat soon?

Keye stopped and opened her pack and found some venison. They both sat down and ate the venison together. Keye realized it was getting into the evening and decided that they needed to build a fire. Together the woman and the girl gathered sticks and dry grass and they built a fire. Finally it was almost time for them to sleep. Then Keye noticed some children in the woods looking on them. It scared her to see random children in the woods. She asked Joy, Do you see any kids in the woods around us?

Joy looked around and said, I sure do! Then she began to call them to their fire. A large group of children came to warm themselves by the fire. Keye noticed that they were hungry too. Some of them were very skinny. She gave the kids her venison as well so that these children were all fed. The kids all found comfortable places to sleep and lay down next to Joy. They all gathered together and happily went to sleep.

Keye watched the children go to sleep and found more sticks and brush to keep the fire going into the night. She was now their leader. Keye stood watching the children sleep. She sat down on a nearby tree stump and wondered how she could even begin to take on the responsibility to help these children! She began to remember why she left
