Praise ye the Lord. Praise God in his sanctuary: praise him in the firmament of his power. Praise him for his mighty acts; praise him according to his excellent greatness. Praise him with the sound of the trumpet: praise him with the psaltery and harp. Praise him with the timbrel and dance: praise him with stringed instruments and organs. Praise him upon the loud cymbals: praise him upon the high sounding cymbals. Let every thing that hath breath praise the Lord. Praise ye the Lord. (Psalm 150 KJV)

    A Word from the Publisher

The centrality of music in the Christian experience always has been recognized and affirmed by church leaders. In fact, music is called the universal language because it not only transcends cultural and linguistic barriers; it also rises above denominational barriers and serves to unite people of different faiths.

When God is recognized as the motivation and inspiration for the music we sing, and Jesus Christ is exalted through its melody, people are brought to joyous recognition of God’s faithfulness and greatness. In fact, for hymns and songs to be meaningful they should have their foundation in the Word of God. It is God’s Word that provides the context and foundation for this 21st Century Edition.

The conception and publication was for a two-fold purpose: first, to enhance all aspects of our worship; second, to preserve our great religious heritage and music for generations to come. With this in mind, this hymnal has been published using a standard that all other hymnals will follow. This hymnal encompasses hymns that have added so much richness and diversity in our worship services. This new hymnal is inclusive of many features that will add both enjoyment and proficiency in the utilization of this comprehensive collection of Christian songs by both church congregations and individually. This 21st century hymnal includes such features as a glossary of musical terms, scriptural based meditations, benedictions, offertory appeals, anthems, praise songs, children’s songs, contemporary gospel songs, scriptural references for each hymn title, and many other features.

As the publisher, it is our prayer that God will continue to be glorified through the hymns and songs contained in these pages. We also pray that souls will be moved to praise God, from whom all blessings flow. As God is glorified in praise, may your spirit soar to higher heights and may your faith evolve to experience deeper depths.

It is with immense gratitude that we thank those of the household of faith who have given their time and talent to bring this project to fruition. This hymnal publication was undertaken with a sincere prayer that it finds a meaningful place of inspiration and edification in every church and every heart.

Speaking to yourselves in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody in your heart to the Lord. (Ephesians 5:19 KJV)

    Purpose

The writing of music is a gift from the Italian culture. Its language tells us how music is to be sung and played. If each country used its own language, it would be difficult for us to understand this art form that is so dear to all cultures. Consequently, all countries have adopted Italian terms for their music. If we know these terms, we will understand how to sing and play music of any country.

Creating a new hymnal brings many challenges and rewards. As we reflect upon the first two thousand years of the Christian faith, the family of faith throughout the world has made great contributions by telling the gospel message of Christ through its experience, music, and theology.

Christians have always been noted as a singing people. The early chants, psalms, hymns, spirituals, and early and modern gospel songs, all reflect the Christian experience. We are grateful to great composers and lyricists like Thomas A. Dorsey, John Wesley, Luci Campbell, Martin Luther, Charlotte Elliott, Isaac Watts, John Newton, Fanny J. Crosby, Dottie Rambo, and others for their musical genius and contributions to the community of faith.

This 21st Century Edition brings together the European chants and hymns, the African-American spirituals and contemporary gospel music telling in narrative form the experiences of a Christian nation. This great music gives meaning and purpose to our worship as we proclaim the beliefs and tenets of the Christian faith.

Music is the language and hope of the soul, when lifted up in the presence of the Divine, by those who have been set sin free for the glory of God and service to all people. As did the psalmist of old, let us call the people of God to worship.

O sing unto the Lord a new song: sing unto the Lord, all the earth. Sing unto the Lord, bless his name; show forth his salvation from day to day.

    (Psalm 96:1-2 KJV)

Make a joyful noise unto the Lord, all ye lands. Serve the Lord with gladness: come before his presence with singing. Know ye that the Lord he is God: it is he that hath made us, and not we ourselves; we are his people, and the sheep of his pasture. Enter into his gates with thanksgiving, and into his courts with praise: be thankful unto him, and bless his name. For the Lord is good; his mercy is everlasting; and his truth endureth to all generations. (Psalm 100)
