Bob Moats

Detroit area resident, Bob Moats, has been writing short stories and plays for as long as he can remember. He has lost most of his original stories, typed or handwritten, in the numerous moves he has made from his hometown of Fraser, Michigan to Northern Michigan, to Las Vegas and back to Fraser, where he now lives. Moats became one of the causalities of unemployment a year ago, and had time on his hands to finally pursue a life long dream of writing a full blown crime novel. Thus was born the first book, "Classmate Murders".What followed was a series of seven books starting with "The Classmate Murders" which introduces the main character, Jim Richards, who has to admit he has become a senior citizen, reluctantly. Richards, one day, receives an email from a childhood sweetheart asking for his help, but by the time he reaches her, she has been murdered. His life turns around and he is pulled into numerous murders of women from his high school who he hasn't seen in forty years. Along with a friend of his, Buck, a big, mustached biker, they go off to track down the killer before he can get to one former classmate, Penny Wickens, a TV talk show host who Jim has just fallen for while protecting her. The killer is also murdering the women right out from under police protection, driving homicide detective Will Trapper crazy, and he slowly depends on Jim to help. There's humor, suspense, wild chases across suburban Detroit with cops, classic cars and motorcycle clubs; murder, mayhem, a good amount of romance and a twist ending.Jim and his crime fighters, continue in the other books, traveling to Las Vegas twice, back to Detroit and out to New York to solve murders involving dominatrix; mistresses; Bridezillas; magic and strip clubs.Book titles: Classmate Murders; Vegas Showgirl Murders; Dominatrix Murders; Mistress Murders; Bridezilla Murders; Magic Murders; Strip Club Murders and Made-for-TV Murders.

Seduction in Detroit - Bob Moats

    Chapter 1

    ––––––––

Scott Murphy was having a great dream in which he was making out with a very cute nymphet when he opened his eyes and screamed. He was looking into the face of his partner Hadeem McDougan leaning over him.

Napping again, Scott? I'm sure the captain would love to watch you grinning as you dream, Haddy said, standing up.

I wasn't sleeping. I was daydreaming with my eyes closed, there's a difference, Murphy defended.

Sure, one involves cute little smiles, the other, snoring. You tend to snore, Haddy said as he went back to his desk. Aren't you getting enough sleep at home? You seem to like snoozing here.

I snooze when I'm bored. It's a defense mechanism I have established for the off times here in the squad.

Well, we have a case, but you were busy dreaming about whatever you dream about. I was caught by the captain as I walked past his door. We're to go to the morgue and see Harry.

    What's he got?

Well, I can tell you after we talk to him. The captain didn't say. Are you fully awake now?

I'm always fully awake. Shall we go? Murphy said and stood. The two men went out of the squad room and downstairs to the morgue.

Remember to breathe through your mouth, Haddy said warning Murphy not to smell the stench of the autopsy room, which often made him sick.

I got it, Murphy replied as they went into the glass enclosed room where Harry Tomlin, coroner, was working on a female body.

Harry, how can you work on women and not get turned on by their female...attributes? Murphy asked as they came over.

Just say it, Murphy. Boobs, Harry said with a slight laugh. I've seen so many, they don't even faze me anymore. Well, some of the really well-endowed ones impress me. But I have to maintain my professional standards. I just do my job and get through it.

Murphy could never work down here. He'd be snuggling up to a boob or two, Haddy mugged.

Not on a dead body. I like mine warm and moving. So, what do you have here, Doc? The captain sent us down to see you.

This woman was found this morning in a lot off Michigan Avenue and Trumble.

You mean the old Tiger stadium property? Haddy asked.

In the parking lot next to the now vacant lot, yes. It was a dump job, no blood at the scene. Her throat was slit, but she bled out elsewhere.

How long has she been dead? Murphy asked.

About two days. She had to be stored before the dumping. She was reported as a missing person. Name's Betty Ronson from Dearborn, Harry said.

Who caught the case? Haddy asked.

Mike Andresen, but the captain decided to put you two on the case

    Why? Murphy wondered.

This isn't the first woman to come in with this cause of death. She's the third in two weeks with identical wounds. The captain was down here to see if it's a serial killing and said he was going to assign you two.

Who has the murder books on these women? Murphy asked.

You're the detectives, you'll have to find out. I just work down here with the stiffs.

Do you ever talk to them, like Ducky from NCIS? Murphy joked.

Yes, and I have very nice conversations with them. They speak volumes of information on how they died.

The woman on the table suddenly made a gasping sound, causing Murphy to jump.

See, she speaks, Harry laughed. It's just gases in the body releasing. Some days in here it's like a symphony of gases. At first it was unnerving, but I've gotten used to it.

Murphy smiled and said, You're a lonely man, Harry. We'll leave you alone with your choir and go find the reports on the women. Thanks, Doc.

Murphy turned, followed by Haddy, and left the room. So, where do we start? Murphy asked.

Mike Andresen comes to mind, Haddy said.

Sure, he's in missing persons. Let's go visit, Murphy said as they went up the stairs.

They climbed up to the third floor and into the squad room for missing persons. They found Mike Andresen sitting at his desk going over some papers.

The paperwork never ends, does it, Mike? Murphy said as they came over to him.

Andresen looked up and smiled. Hey, Murph, Haddy, what's up?

You caught a body dump this morning, what led up to that? Murphy asked.

Andresen reached over to a file on his desk and handed it to Murphy. We got a call last week about a missing woman. The sister filed the report after the customary waiting period and I was going to start on it, when a patrol car found the woman in the old stadium parking lot. Forensics went out and did a scan of her fingertips and she was in the system for soliciting.

    She's a hooker? Murphy asked.

Well, that depends on the type of soliciting. She was looking for women, not men. She's a lesbian, or I should say was. She was caught by a female undercover officer in a bar looking for johns and was surprised that this woman approached her.

She asked for money in return for sex with the female cop? Haddy asked.

That's the understanding. She ran through the system and was released the next day. Just the wheels of justice turning a blind eye to women on women. I heard you two are going to handle the murder.

That's what we understand. Do you know anything about two other similar cases of women murdered like this one?

Yeah, they were all reported missing and then the bodies turned up. I don't know who caught the cases in homicide, you'll have to follow that trail.

Murphy paused, then asked, Do you know off hand if the other two women were lesbians?

I heard one was, but don't know about the other. We get hundreds of missing persons reported daily, it's hard to keep track of them all. Good luck with finding the info.

Thanks, Mike, Murphy said and motioned to Haddy to leave. Out in the hall they paused to look at the file Mike gave Murphy. Not much here, but there is an address for the victim's sister. We can check that out later after we find the reports on the other two vics. Let's go hit the computer.

They went back to their squad room and Murphy started his search on his computer. Okay, found one, Maureen Daily. Murdered by slit to the throat and dumped by the MGM Grand casino. Murphy went silent as he dug for the other victim's file.

Haddy sat watching his partner just as the captain came out of his office and over to the men. Murphy sat back and waited.

Have you two got an idea of what to expect? he asked.

Murphy said, We just started to dig for the reports on the other murdered women. I've found one of the victims, Maureen Daily. Looking for the other now.

Try Francis LaGrange. I read the report this morning

Murphy typed in the name and waited for the file to come up. Yep, here it is. Thanks, Captain.

I'm seeing someone is targeting gay women. We don't need this to become an issue, so get on it and catch the bastard before the press sniffs it out. The captain turned and went back to his office.

Murphy was examining the report and said, Well, the fun begins.

    Chapter 2

    ––––––––

So, what's Francis' story? Haddy asked as Murphy was studying the file.

Same story. Reported missing by friends and then she turned up dead by the fence at the old abandoned train station. Patrol car found her sitting up against the fence, looking like she was passed out. Then they saw the slit in her throat. No blood on her other than around the wound. Interesting.

Why? Haddy asked leaning forward on his desk.

The coroner's report said she was bled out. All the blood gone. I wonder if the perp slit her throat and leaned her over a bucket to collect her blood. Maybe we have a vampire or some health nut who bathes in blood.

What about Maureen Daily? Was she bled out? Haddy asked.

Murphy flipped back to the report on the first woman. He read the file and said, Yep, she had minimum blood in her system, she was drained of her blood. Murphy reached for the file on his desk for the woman they found this morning. I'm not seeing anything in here if she was low on blood.

Call Harry and see what he has.

Murphy reached for his desk phone and hit the speed dial for the morgue. Harry, Murphy here, can you tell me if the woman this morning was bled out? He listened and then thanked the coroner and hung up. He looked at Haddy and said, "She was. This is an interesting twist. Why
