About this ebook

I was diagnosed with prostate cancer in mid June 2014 and set about finding out all I could about what came next. This isn't a research paper, it's my look at options and what I found out along the way. I found some humour, not in having cancer, but about what happened to me. My friends all believe that I have a warped sense of humour. My mother said that I was the only person who laughed at a cancer diagnosis. Not quite true, I had my moments along the way.

50 something guy with a love of photography and journalism. I studied some Photojournalism Units at Latrobe UNI in Australia and have had a few articles published in the online version of the Redland Times. I have lived in some interesting places around the world during my career in the Oil & Gas Industry.Jakarta twice, the first time during the period in 1998 when the Soeharto Regime was overthrown: Saudi, living on the Oasis compound in Al Khobar when Al Qaeda invaded it: Kuwait during the second Gulf War: Kuala Lumpur: Jakarta again and Libya during the 40th anniversary of the revolution that installed Gadhafi as, well whatever he was. Thankfully we got out of there prior to the place going through the Arab Spring and the ensuing civil war.As my wife says, life has not been dull!

    About Me

    Introduction

This work was not intended to be cathartic for me. Nor is it intended for use by anyone contemplating some serious research on Prostate cancer. I based it on my experience, my opinions and my decisions. Everyone will deal with finding out that they have Prostate Cancer, or any cancer for that matter in their own way. There is no right way or wrong way, just your way.

It is my take on what happened to me and how I found some humour in what happened.

Everyone I encountered through this process was extremely professional. They inevitably had a sense of humour and a straightforward manner when handling me as a patient.

What did surprise me was my reaction. I took the information when I was given it in my stride, everyone gave it to me in very matter of fact tones. There was no I have bad news false sympathy, simply the facts and the alternatives.

My biggest surprise was that I had emotional good days and bad days. I consider myself a very upbeat and positive person. I am also very pragmatic, if there is an issue I will deal with it. My wife is the same in this, when we are faced with an issue we dissect it, rationalise a way forward and deal with it. But here I am up and down, never second guessing why it happened or decisions we make, just up and down from time to time.

I found though, that the more research I did on Prostate Cancer and what was going to be done, the more settled I became. I found out about plenty of things that would be consequences of the removal of my prostate. These were more difficult for me to deal with than the thought of the operation itself. I am in my early fifties and the thought of being impotent is unsettling. As is the prospect of some degree of incontinence.

Finding the right Urologist and Surgeon is critically important. A surgeon who does the nerve sparing operation and talks about what he does to mitigate the post-operative issues is your first step. Following the instructions post op is equally important, something that men are not so good at.

There are some pictures in this work from places that I found on the net. I have done the right thing and captioned them with attributions.

My wife. My wife is critically important to me through all of this. She loves me
