About this ebook
I drove many miles to meet him. I took an unfamiliar route and five miles off the highway I knew that that decision had been a mistake. Scenic routes are beautiful in the daylight, but this mountain road was dark, narrow, winding and worse of all desolate. I should have identified this scenario for the foreshadowing that it was and anticipated what I might be driving into.
With the exception of my headlights there were no lights at all.
And several hours later it was there -- like a phoenix rising from the ashes, or maybe just a motel around the bend in the road, that eerily serene mountain chalet should have been the perfect relief to a not-so-perfect evening.
I drove many miles to get there.
Brisk mountain air; clear, black sky; utter silence. Holed up for the night in a spacious suite with a daytime view...and an unwanted guest.

THE DRIVE UP.
I drove many miles to meet him. Overnight travel is a fairly large part of my job. Some people schedule designate ‘travel’ days to cover their territories, but not me. I tend to integrate my travel around my appointment itinerary and vice versa. The ferry carried me across the sound after a full day’s work. I drove two hundred miles from there. Straight through as planned. I never really consider the mileage I put on myself and my truck during the day which sometimes bites me in the butt toward the end of the day but nothing that a cup of joe can’t erase. The sun had set while we were crossing the sound. I got the front spot on the ferry, water view - prime real estate. It was a beautiful sunset and an easy evening – despite a busy day working the phones, setting up deals. Traffic was light and flowing notwithstanding the time of day; most people were rushing
home; me, I was driving from home, just starting out, in fact.
I chose a different route than I usually travel. My best friend Anne strongly advised against it, it’s back country roads – it will take forever. I wouldn’t go that way!
But, this was before personal GPS, and I insisted that my Mapquest printout would not steer me wrong. And, you should have left earlier,
she warned as I clicked my seatbelt and pulled off the ferry. I couldn’t help thinking how much she
