Korea, October 25th 1950. Somewhere very near the 38th parallel.

The Sergeant looked them over, so many fresh young faces, all nervous but also ready to face any danger he might suggest to them. So remember lads, no names spoken out loud – at all. Just ranks. Nicknames if you must, but even then only face to face. The enemy, they listen in, they learn. They use that against us. It's how they got our medic last night.

What are we looking for? a voice from the assembled group asked.

The Sergeant focussed in on the offender, eager to correct him. One of the new Privates, still green from training. "What are we looking for, Sergeant? What are they teaching you kids today back home? See these three things on my arm? It means you address me as Sergeant. Okay, Private?"

Sorry Sergeant. What are we looking for, Sergeant? said the formerly informal Private.

Wreckage. Radio chatter said there was a big supply convoy attacked somewhere near here, there might be survivors, maybe some food or ammo too. We're always short on stuff, you know that. The Sergeant knew he couldn't tell them everything, that was just the way the military worked. A need to know basis.

And right now, they didn't need to know much. The less they knew, the better, in fact. Because what they didn't know couldn't hurt them. And they couldn't be hurt, or forced to tell either. He knew the enemy were hot on their tail.
