About this ebook

“EVERY BIT AS GOOD AS EMMA FINN’S NOVELS AND SHORT STORIES”

Max is wealthy and striking. He is ruthless and manipulative; sometimes even cruel and mercurial; and he has found his perfect match in his wife.

Both live lives close to the very edge of propriety and fidelity, with soaring passions and devilish schemes. Max is a game player of epic proportions, but tonight it seems that all his games may finally come to an end.

Tonight Max brings a beautiful call girl back to their apparently empty apartment and tries to have his way with her, but the girl has her own agenda and it soon becomes obvious that Max’s wife does too. But when the girl makes her play for the jewellery in the safe and the seemingly absent wife sets her hidden schemes in motion, Max reveals that he has plots of his own.

Thus begins an evening of strikes and counter-strikes as Max and his spouse fight to get one up on the other one final time with the stakes getting higher and higher and more out of control. This is going to be the end of it all and neither one of them is going to go down peacefully.

    ACT I

(The stage is empty. ENTER MAX and SARAH. SARAH has a cardigan on over a very sexy outfit. She has a strong Essex accent)

MAX: Here we are. My not so humble abode. Come on in.

SARAH: Not bad. You live here by yourself?

    MAX: Nope. With my wife.

    SARAH: Where is she now?

MAX: Who cares. Fancy a drink?

    SARAH: No thanks.

MAX: Sure? I’m having something. (EXITS to kitchen)

SARAH: Okay. I’ll have the same as you!

(SARAH has a guarded look round)

SARAH: This is a terrific flat!

    MAX: (Off) Thanks!

SARAH: I wish I had a place like this!

MAX: (Off) It’s probably a little out of your price bracket.

SARAH: Don’t you worry that she’ll come back?

    MAX: (Off) Who?

    SARAH: Your wife!

MAX: (Off) No. (SHORT PAUSE) I used to.

    SARAH: But you don’t anymore?

    MAX: (ENTERS with drinks) No.

    SARAH: Why not?

    MAX: She caught me once.

    SARAH: Really?

MAX: Sure. Here’s your drink. Jack Daniels alright?

    SARAH: Thanks.

MAX: Yeah, she walked in on me when I was with someone.

    SARAH: Your mistress?

MAX: No. Just some girl I picked up at a club. We were on the sofa, right here. She walks in the door – back early.

    SARAH: What did she do?

MAX: Nothing. Just looked at us. Then said she was going to bed and went through. Didn’t even mention it the next day.

SARAH: She didn’t get mad or anything?

MAX: Nope. Just left me to it. Shall we get down to business?

    SARAH: Where’s the bedroom?

MAX: We’re going to do it in here.

SARAH: Oh. Okay. (Spots picture) Is that your wife?

MAX: We’ll just pop these flowers in front of her. Don’t want those beady eyes watching us, do we?

    SARAH: What’s she like?

    MAX: You seem very interested.

    SARAH: Just curious.

MAX: (PAUSE) She’s getting on for middle age. Dark hair. Bit too plump. I like my women…

    SARAH: More like me?

    MAX: Yes. Physically.

    SARAH: Why not mentally?

    MAX: (Chuckles)

    SARAH: What’s wrong with me?

MAX: I don’t want to offend you.

    SARAH: You won’t.

MAX: (PAUSE) All right. (PAUSE) You’re not bad looking… for what I’m paying. But… You aren’t wife material.

SARAH: Not… wife material. (PAUSE) Is that why you’re still married to her – even if you don’t find her attractive?

MAX: She’s good to have around for the day-to-day stuff - but she doesn’t… push every button… that needs pushing… if you know what I mean.

SARAH: Why does she put up with you having affairs in front of her?

MAX: You’ve got a mouth on you.

SARAH: All part of my charm love.

MAX: Well why do you think then?

SARAH: (PAUSE) Because of the money?

MAX: You think so? Maybe she’s sticking around out of love.

SARAH: Money’s the only reason I’d stay and put up with that kind of crap.

MAX: Ooo, that mouth. You’re great.

SARAH: Worth every penny. (PAUSE) So. How rich are you?

MAX: I don’t talk about money to anyone.

    SARAH: Not even your wife?

MAX: (Laughs) Especially not her! Wives don’t need to know what they don’t need to know.

SARAH: I’m not sure all men would agree with that.

MAX: They will as soon as this women’s lib fad is over.

    SARAH: I wasn’t aware women’s lib was a fad.

MAX: Course it is. Have you ever seen a woman in a position of responsibility?

    SARAH: Yes.

MAX: Well I rest my case.

SARAH: (Her accent slips) I can see why you have to pay women to sleep with you.

    MAX: What was that?

    SARAH: It’s a nice room.

MAX: Uh huh. What’s with your accent? It just changed for a minute.

SARAH: I can’t think why. Sounds normal to me. Is that better?

MAX: Yeah. Okay. You can put your glass down over there. (PAUSE) So!

    SARAH: (PAUSE) So.

    MAX: You ready?

SARAH: I’m… I guess. Have you… Have you lived here long?

MAX: How about we don’t talk about that right now.

SARAH: I’d like to talk a bit more.

MAX: Well that’s not going to happen sweetheart. I’m the one paying the bills, remember? When I say go, we go. That all right with you?

SARAH: Er… yes. Yes it is.

MAX: Well let’s see you get a bit lively then. I want my money’s worth.

    SARAH: Okay.

MAX: Come on. Give me a show. (SARAH PAUSES, then starts to dance sexily) No, stop. Take that cardigan off. I want to see more of you. (SARAH takes off her cardigan) Yeah. That’s nice. That’s good. Go. (SARAH self-consciously starts dancing again) I like that. Yeah. (SARAH loses balance and then sighs, fed-up) What’s the matter?

SARAH: I… I’m just not in the mood.

MAX: How can you not be in the mood? This is your job. You have to do it whether you want to or not!

    SARAH: Come on Max…

MAX: (PAUSE) How did you know my name?

SARAH: I… Your friend called it you when you first started talking to me. In the bar.

MAX: What’s the matter with you?

    SARAH: I’m sorry. I just
