As I was finishing this first book in the new Turning Point series, I thought of the many people who had encouraged me in this project. Dr. Merritt Barber, a dentist in our church, has many times expressed to me the hope that someday our Bible study material could be packaged for use in home Bible studies. When you are in a dental chair and your mouth is full of Novocain, you can’t do much else but listen. I did!
For the last five years, every time I have seen Victor Books’ Mark Sweeney, he has reminded me that we ought to work on such a project together. We finally did it, Mark! Warren Wiersbe, who has given us the wonderful Be series of Bible studies, has urged me often to begin this process. As we shared a meal in Dayton, Tennessee, he finally convinced me that I should make this a priority.
My father, Dr. James T. Jeremiah, has consistently reminded me that writing should be a part of my life. My wife, Donna, has cheered me on when the pressures of our busy life made the completion of this assignment seem impossible. Paul Joiner added a whole new dimension to our study of God’s Word through his creative writing and directing of the dramatic sketches that correspond to each lesson. Glenda Parker, my administrative assistant, diligently protected my time for study and writing. My friends around the country tell me she is the best gatekeeper they have ever met! Without her efforts, this book would not be a reality.
As I reflect upon all these wonderful friends, I am drawn to the words Paul used to express his love for the Philippian believers: I thank my God upon every remembrance of you.
Introduction
In 1620 a ship left Plymouth, England, carrying the seeds of life as we know it in the United States today. But that voyage, as important as it was, cannot rival the one in AD 52 that embarked from Troas and sailed toward Neapolis.
The apostle Paul, his fellow preacher Silas, Luke the physician and writer, and Paul’s disciple Timothy were aboard the vessel that brought the seeds of spiritual life to all of Europe and eventually the United States. Biblical scholars have called this the greatest event in history! For four thousand years, Asia had been the cradle of the human race; now that center was moving to Europe.
As Paul embarked on his second missionary journey, it was his hope to return to all the churches he had visited on his previous excursion. But according to Acts 16:6–7, he was forbidden to go north to Asia or northeast to Bithynia. While in Troas, the Lord spoke to Paul through a vision, in which he saw a man from Macedonia pleading with him to come over and help the people there. Paul’s response is recorded by Luke: Now after he had seen the vision, immediately we sought to go to Macedonia, concluding that the Lord had called us to preach the gospel to them
(16:10).
Paul and his company left Troas via the most direct route to the seaport of Neapolis and from there to the most important city in Macedonia, Philippi. Located about nine miles from the coast of the Aegean Sea, Philippi was a Roman colony and a flourishing, wealthy city. When Paul and his associates arrived there, they found no synagogue; on the Sabbath they assembled at the riverside where worshippers had been gathering regularly for prayer. As a result of that first meeting, Lydia, a merchant woman, was converted and baptized. In gratitude for what the Lord had done in her life, she offered her home as a place of lodging for the missionary team.
As soon as it became evident that the Lord was going to bless His Word, opposition developed. A demon-possessed slave girl began to follow the preachers and associate herself with them by loudly announcing their mission. Within a short time Paul cast the demon out of her, and she too was converted and made whole. The men who owned this girl had been using her for their own gain and were furious. They seized Paul and Silas and had them beaten and thrown in jail. Locked in the inner prison, the two men were placed in stocks, under secure guard. At midnight, as they were singing praises to God, an earthquake broke open the prison and freed all the prisoners from their bonds. The jailer, asleep in the adjoining house, heard the commotion and ran to the prison. Although the night was dark, he could see that the doors were open, and he concluded that the prisoners must have escaped. Rather than suffer shameful death, he decided to take his own life. He had drawn his sword to kill himself when Paul saw what was about to happen. He told the jailer not to harm himself, because they had not escaped! As a result of this encounter, the jailer and all his family were saved and baptized.
Ten years after the founding of the church in Philippi, while Paul was a prisoner, he wrote to his Macedonian friends. Three times in his letter he expressed his gratitude for the gift they had sent to him by way of Epaphroditus. He had heard they were concerned about him, and he wished to encourage them. But he also had some corrective concerns. He knew that a spirit of division had developed among them, and several times he admonished them to be unified. On six different occasions he referred to the coming day of Christ, reminding them finally that the Lord is at hand
(Phil. 4:5). He concluded his letter with encouraging words for their anxious hearts.
The theme of this letter is joy. The word rejoice is found nine times, the word joy four times, and the expression rejoice with
two times. Even though he was writing as a prisoner, Paul was filled with joy, and that joy permeates his letter. The secret of his joy was his relationship with Jesus Christ. The letter begins and ends with the name of Jesus. Forty times Paul mentioned his beloved Savior’s name, eighteen times in chapter 1 alone, which averages at least one citation in every two or three verses.
Paul saw himself as a slave of Christ. He referred to the Philippians as saints in Christ. He described his imprisonment as his bonds in Christ; and even though he knew that some were taking advantage of his imprisonment, he rejoiced that Christ was being preached. He had abandoned all things for the excellency of the knowledge of Jesus Christ, and he spoke of his life as to live is Christ.
For the apostle, even death was defined as being with Christ.
As he admonished the congregation in Philippi to be unified, he expressed his hope that they would let this mind be in you which was also in Christ Jesus.
Even his personal plans were expressed in relationship to his Lord. He trusted in the Lord Jesus to send Timothy to the Philippians, and he trusted in the Lord that he would be able to come to them himself.
He desired to win Christ and to know Christ, and he pointed to heaven from whence also he was looking for the Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ. He concluded his letter by expressing his desire that the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ
would be with the Philippians.
The reason for Paul’s joy was his relationship with Christ! As we study his letter to the Philippians, we will observe the testing of that joy in the crucible of Roman imprisonment. If Paul’s relationship to his Master could bring him joy under those conditions, then surely we who also love the Savior can learn to rejoice in our difficult times as well.

I thank my God upon every remembrance of you, always in every prayer of mine making request for you all with joy, for your fellowship in the gospel from the first day until now, being confident of this very thing, that He who has begun a good work in you will complete it until the day of Jesus Christ; just as it is right for me to think this of you all, because I have you in my heart, inasmuch as both in my chains and in the defense and confirmation of the gospel, you all are partakers with me of grace. For God is my witness, how greatly I long for you all with the affection of Jesus Christ.
And this I pray, that your love may abound still more and more in knowledge and all discernment, that you may approve the things that are excellent, that you may be sincere and without offense till the day of Christ, being filled with the fruits of righteousness which are by Jesus Christ, to the glory and praise of God.

The Joy of Community
Philippians 1:1–11
Always in every prayer of mine making request for you all with joy.
When Gale Sayers and Brian Piccolo, running backs for the Chicago Bears, began rooming together in the late sixties, it was a first for both of them. Sayers had never had a close relationship with a white person and Piccolo had never really known a black person.
During the 1968 season, Gale Sayers suffered a career-threatening knee injury. Many thought he would never play again. But one year later, after the close of the 1969 season and having made a full recovery, Gale Sayers stood at the banquet of the New York chapter of Professional Football Writers of America to accept the George S. Halas Award as the most courageous player in pro football.
Sayers and Piccolo had planned, with their wives, to sit together at the banquet. Instead, Piccolo was confined to his bed at home. His fight wasn’t with a football injury but with cancer.
That night, Sayers accepted the George S. Halas Award, but he accepted it for Brian Piccolo. As he stood to receive his trophy he said, You flatter me by giving me this award, but I tell you here and now that I accept it for Brian Piccolo. Brian Piccolo is the man of courage who should receive the George S. Halas Award. It is mine tonight; it is Brian Piccolo’s tomorrow. I love Brian Piccolo and I’d like all of you to love him too. Tonight, when you hit your knees, please ask God to love Brian Piccolo.

For some reason, those words sound strange coming from a professional athlete. In our culture, grown men do not usually express their affection so openly.
Before us now is a letter that is filled with expressions of love. As we read this brief letter from Paul to his friends in Philippi, we are immediately struck by the eloquent words he used to describe the deep feelings of attachment he had for all of them.
The small church to which he wrote was located in a Roman colony known as Philippi. For over a decade the members of this church had lived and worked together as a close-knit group of believers. Now, the apostle who had founded the church some ten years earlier could not hide the deep sense of attachment he felt for them. He had been separated from them because of his imprisonment, and he longed for them. His life seemed incomplete without their fellowship. Dr. John Townsend explained in modern terms the pain that was felt by the great apostle:
The reason is found in the law of entropy, or the second law of thermodynamics. This law of physics states that things that are isolated move toward deterioration.… Entropy operates in the spiritual world, too. Whatever is cut off tends toward deterioration. That’s why the ultimate punishment, hell, is not defined by loss of consciousness or annihilation, but by its utter and complete separation from the love of God. Jesus’ sacrifice for us involved His own separation from the Father when He became sin on our behalf. He suffered in that He was cut off out of the land of the living
(Isaiah 53:8). In other words, there is no life without relationship. ²
Paul’s personal relationship with these intimate friends was interrupted because of his imprisonment, but his love for them had not diminished. In fact, his opening remarks in this letter were devoted to a detailed expression of his love for them and the prayer that their love for him and for each other would continue to grow. As Paul communicated his feelings for the Philippians, he touched on many of the key prerequisites for loving relationships within any local assembly. As he concluded his opening remarks, he launched into a prayer for the growth and maturity of these associates for whom he cared so deeply.
Humility: The Attitude of Love
The letters of the New Testament usually begin with three important details. There is first of all the name of the sender, followed by the names of the subjects, concluding with the salutation or greeting to the readers. The sender of the letter to the Philippians is identified simply as Paul. The name in Latin means little
or small.
Before God, Paul saw himself as the least of all the saints
(Eph. 3:8).
As he wrote to his friends in Philippi, Paul was in prison in Rome (Phil. 1:7, 13). When he spoke of his friend Timothy, he referred to them both as fellow bondservants
of Christ. Later on he spoke of Timothy like this: As a son with his father he served with me in the gospel
(2:22). In ancient cultures, the sons born to slaves were automatically slaves themselves. Since Timothy was Paul’s spiritual son, he inherited his slavehood status.
Paul saw everything in his life through the lens of his slavery to Christ. Outwardly he wrote as a slave of Caesar, but inwardly he considered himself a bondslave to Jesus Christ. He had come to Rome bound in chains, but he referred to these chains as in Christ
(1:13). To Paul, the term servant was a title of dignity and humility. There was no greater position than to be a servant of Jehovah God. We all would do well to remember that God did not save us to become sensations but rather to become servants.
Humble service is a dominant theme in this letter. Besides Paul, Timothy and Epaphroditus are held up as examples of a servant lifestyle. The greatest model of servanthood, however, is Jesus Christ, who took the form of a servant even though He was the sovereign God (2:7). No wonder Paul exhorted believers everywhere to adopt this perspective of life (2:5).
Unity: The Atmosphere of Love
While humility is the attitude of love, unity is the atmosphere in which love thrives. The harmony of the Philippian assembly was reflected in this letter first by Paul’s reference to the members of the congregation as all the saints in Christ Jesus who are in Philippi
(1:1). The term saints means set apart ones.
Whenever the word saint appears in the Bible, it is almost always in the plural form. This is a gentle reminder to us that saints are not meant for isolation but for community. In a letter that Amy Carmichael wrote to her friends in the Dohnavur Fellowship, she painted a graphic picture of our importance to one another in the body of Christ:
Unlove is deadly. It is a cancer. It may kill slowly, but it always kills in the end. Let us fear it, fear to give room to it as we should fear to nurse a cobra. It is deadlier than any cobra.… One drop of the gall of unlove in my heart or yours, however unseen, has a terrible power of spreading all through our Family, for we are one body—we are parts of one another. If one member suffers loss, all suffer loss. Not one of us liveth to himself. If unlove be discovered anywhere, stop everything and put it right, if possible, at once. ³
