About this ebook

In the Spring of 2001, I strapped on a backpack and attempted to hike the entire length of the Appalachian Trail. I made it as far as Damascus, Virginia.

In the Summer of 2002, I returned to pick up where I had left off. I hiked southern Virginia that year.

Here is my trail journal from that hike. It is the second of eight.

Who am I? I'm a lover of sci-fi and fantasy fiction as well as a fan of classic movies. I'm a self-proclaimed royal historian of Oz as well as the self-proclaimed emperor of Canada and, yes, I'm completely full of it. I like to think that I'm a sterling example of person with Asperger's syndrome. It may be more trouble than it's worth but it lends me and my writing a distinctive perspective. I live in the real-life fairy country along the border between Delaware and Pennsylvania. Although, during the summers, I like to throw on a backpack and go walking among the mountains.

    A brief introduction

What you hold in your hands is the second of eight journals which I kept during eight distinct hikes on the Appalachian Trail. My first hike on the Appalachian Trail was an attempted thru-hike which I gave up on six weeks & 450 miles later. Thru-hiking didn't work for me but I still loved hiking the Appalachian Trail.

    Therefore, I did four things.

First, I decided to hike the remainder of the Appalachian Trail a section at a time during the summer months. This way, I could hike in a more relaxed fashion.

Second, I did some research on lightweight backpacking and replaced nearly all of my hiking equipment in order to get my pack weight down to about 30 pounds, which was about half the weight that I had started out with on my previous hike. The lighter pack allowed me to focus more on the actual hike and less on hauling around a heavy pack.

Third, I resolutely traveled without any hiking partners. Hiking alone makes things simpler for me. Alone, I can make my own decisions. Alone, I am fully responsible only for my own darn self and that's all and that's enough.

Fourth, I changed my trail name from Tumbling Tom to Tumbleweed Baggins. Tumbleweed because of my clumsiness. Baggins because I had just finished reading J.R.R. Tolkien's The Hobbit and that novel's protagonist reminded me a little bit of myself. Both of us were basically homebodies who went on an adventure.

Enough talk. Here's my second trail journal. Enjoy.

    The Journal

    June 1

I must be crazy. I've returned to the Appalachian Trail. The time is 8:49PM and it's getting dark. I'm at Saunders shelter. The shelter is full and I'm stuck in my bivy sack. A thunderstorm came through and my gear got wet. I wanted to dry things out properly in the shelter but that can't happen. I really wanted to sleep in a shelter.

Fog in the mountains is different. It has abrupt edges.

My parents and I were up at 4AM to drive to
