Testosterone is a naturally produced hormone in the body. It is produced by both sexes but in 25 times the quantity in men and belongs to the androgen class of hormones. Men produce around 7mg of testosterone per day with a blood level of 300-1000ng/dl being in the normal range. The body naturally limits the amount of testosterone produced by binding it to other proteins. Around 97% of testosterone in the blood is bound to other proteins which means it's useless for other physiological needs. There are two types of bioavailable testosterone – unbound (free) testosterone and that bound to the protein albumin. In this case if you're planning on improving your fitness testosterone can't help you since there's not enough free to make a significant difference. This free testosterone is capable of causing significant changes in the body if it's in enough quantity.
Free testosterone can affect a variety of tissue in the body.
