.......We want the humans to be miserable because they cannot be miserable and devoted to the enemy at the same time. The effort required to be miserable requires all their devotion. On the other hand, we know that other devotions, particularly toward the enemy, leave no place for misery in the human heart.

When the humans are confronted by inevitable setbacks or tragedies, it is time to appeal to their Pride. Where there is sufficient pride they will see themselves as victims of someone else’s greed, cruelty, or stupidity. They will feel personally assaulted by injustice and blame others, even the enemy, for things they did not deserve; that should have been prevented, especially if there really is a god. This kind of misery is often the catalyst for defiance or even revenge.

........While we do in fact want the humans to be miserable and we give them every opportunity, it is also a fact that it is their choice. Help them find it...

BOILWORT STOOD STOICALLY as the devils crowded into the great Hall of Learning. Scorndob and Angrielle glared at the master tempter in guarded anticipation. They were just as surprised as I was that we had been invited to participate in advanced studies. I wondered what that meant. Boilwort moved closer to the edge of the podium. Everyone braced themselves for the thunder of his voice.

Welcome to Temptation 301. Each of you is here because you have qualified yourselves for advanced training. This course will complete your Master Tempter training.

I’ve qualified myself? How can that be? I looked over at Angrielle and Scorndob and could tell they were wondering the same thing.

During this study course you will each, when you’re ready, have the privilege of observing our Master at his finest hour.

The devils all stared in disbelief. There was total silence, followed by a muffled roar that increased in volume as heads turned frantically from one conversation to another.

I’m not sure I like that idea, said Angrielle.

    Me neither, said Scorndob.

Boilwort continued, "The curriculum for this course will include a discussion of what to do with Repentance; how to handle the man who wants to side with the enemy.

"We will also be talking about children, as I’m sure you have noticed that you have no influence over them. You will find that in fact you do.

There will be other topics, such as: extremes and the use of virtues, the power of defiance, the psychology of good will and others as they come up. But, first, a quick word about the importance of knowledge.

At this point Boilwort turned and looked directly at me and then at Angriealle and Scorndob. What now? I thought. His piercing eyes were unrelenting for several seconds and then he continued,

Some of you have been trying to become as knowledgeable as you can and have discovered some limitations. You will also discover that knowledge can give you power over the enemy.

Power over the enemy? He’s delusional. We didn’t dare turn our heads away, but we gave each other a sideways glance. I saw the same surprise on their faces. Obviously he doesn’t know why we want to know more. Is it possible we’ve fooled Boilwort?

My desire for knowledge is unfortunately late in coming. It has increased ever since Temptation 101 and it is the same for Angrielle and Scorndob, but I’m not looking for power over the enemy. I’ve learned enough already to know that is not possible. Helping the humans delude themselves is hardly the same thing as power over God.

Boilwort continued, Knowledge gives us the advantage. Learn all you can about the enemy; you will be better equipped to keep that knowledge from the humans.

That is certainly true. Without knowledge what can the humans do? We could suggest just about anything we want and they would be none the wiser.

It sounds like our job is just one big cover up, said Scorndob.

Yea, I wonder if the master devils are worried about what might happen if the humans learn too much, said Angrielle.

Or remember too much, I added. If they want it, there’s nothing stopping them from knowing everything we know and more.

I know it’s too late, said Angrielle, but I wish I could remember more.

We all do, I said. Had we paid more attention we would. We can’t go back to the spirit world we came from, but maybe more time watching the spirits in Paradise will jog our memories.

    Excellent idea, said Scorndob.
