      We’re only human, or so we tell ourselves. Being human is often the go-to, catch-all reason for behavior we cannot otherwise explain or claim. Human nature is often given credit for both voluntary and involuntary choices we make. Is it possible that our nature is not as human as we suppose? Is there another part of us, not human, that wants to distance ourselves from the human things we do?  Can we rightfully fault our human side for our foolishness? Can we praise the human in us for our brilliance?

      There is no question; we are human, but suppose we’re more than that. What if the human part of us is more or less the expression of the being we really are. What would happen if the human part was at odds with that other being; or in harmony?

      Some of the most intense and painful battles that will ever rage will never be documented; never air on CNN. These battles are private and personal struggles. They are not mortal combat, but the collateral pain and devastation of defeat is real, as is the thrill and happiness of victory. We are never alone on these battle grounds. They are playgrounds for devils. Their games exploit the human factor of every battle, whether it is a minor skirmish or all out insurrection.  Humans would do well to understand their nature at least as well as the devils do.

      I JUST RECEIVED WORD; Boilwort wants his devils back in class. After his lecture on Pride he left abruptly. None of us have heard a word from him for a very long time. It didn’t take long to spot what he was talking about. At first I was convinced that it was simply a human thing, but then I realized that that was my pride talking. With some of the humans I had to look deep and it took a while, but so far, every mortal I’ve observed has shown at least an element of self-love that allows them to be selective when it comes to the enemy’s virtues. Most of them will acknowledge God’s laws, at least in passing, but find them to be an inconvenience that only complicates their lives. Angrielle was right; it has been entertaining. I’ve found it interesting how mortals attempt to customize God. As far as the Christians are concerned, they teach that they were made in the image of God and yet many of them reverse that and create a god in their image. If that doesn’t work for them, they simply conclude that he does not exist. Once they’ve created a god, or no god, to their liking, they are free to modify heaven and hell all they want and all the laws pertaining to heaven become made-to-order. They can get away with that in a world their pride has created for them, but they deceive themselves.

      I’ve been watching long enough now to see what’s going on. It’s actually an amazing thing and all I can do is watch. They have been allowed to step out of eternity for a moment to chart their course. The nature of their eternity is in their hands. It will be an awakening for some when they realize that the type of life they’ve chosen is not compatible with God’s heaven. 

      I was watching the humans; observing how random and unpredictable their reactions are to each other, but Boilwort must have thought my study was more specific. He sent me a letter and I admit, after reading it I began to look at the humans differently.

      Dear Scumtoo, 

      A little background on your current subjects will be both educational and entertaining.  A glance through their files indicates that they are convinced that they were subject to great injustice in their youth.  They demonstrate a text book case of what so many humans detest and indulge at the same time; the Grudge.  It is so useful to us.  Like so many they hold on to injuries which only fester over time.  In the past we have tried to verify some of these claims, but seldom have we ever found substantiating evidence of what the grudgers insists on remembering and certainly nothing that justifies their current feelings, however deeply they’ve managed to bury them.  Of course we are not interested in justifying their feelings, but we are very interested in letting them think they can.  Your humans were subjected to a great deal of impatience, even to extremes on occasion, however, they were at the same time afforded a level of patience to which they were not entirely entitled, but nonetheless received.  They haven’t altogether forgotten
