How To Write Writing Activities
()
About this ebook
People sometimes think that writing is not as relevant as it used to be, because our students now spend so much time online that the traditional writing tasks and text types seem outmoded. However, although it is true that most people don’t handwrite as much as they used to, the growth of online activity means that we are generally writing much, much more than we did. So, writing is, in fact, a vital 21st century skill which needs to take a central role in any set of learning materials.
In this eBook Rachael Roberts, experienced teacher and ELT materials writer, outlines the issues specific to creating writing activities. She describes a variety of tasks focusing on different aspects of writing, ranging from a focus on purpose and organisation to specific language features. She also provides step-by-step instructions for analysing and writing a good model text. Having examined how to write a series of activities and model texts, this practical eBook focuses on the logical staging of the activities, and concludes with a discussion of some considerations if you are writing for digital media. Throughout the eBook, practical tasks and task commentaries invite you to think about the issues highlighted and try out the activities for yourself.
This eBook forms part of the ELT Teacher 2 Writer training course. The training modules are designed to help you write better ELT materials, either for publication, or simply to improve the quality of your self-produced classroom materials.

About The Author
Not knowing quite what to do with a degree in English and Drama, I decided to take a year out to teach abroad, and accidentally discovered my vocation. After a couple of years in Portugal I went to Brazil for two years before briefly returning to do an MA in ELT at Warwick. I was already interested in materials design at that point, and one of the modules I took involved writing a sample unit for a coursebook. Putting this idea on the back burner, I got a job as a Director of Studies in Poland, which led into teacher training on CELTA, CELTYL (Young Learners) and DELTA. One of my CELTA trainees happened to be a publisher and he approached me to write a discovery approach grammar book. It pretty much bombed, though I am very proud of a review on Amazon which announces that it is ‘better than Murphy’!
Back in the UK, I started working at an FE College, teaching and training, and found myself with a lot of low-level Chinese IELTS students. At that time there was nothing available on the market for them, so, together with two colleagues, I sent in a proposal to Macmillan for a lower level IELTS book. By sheer fluke, they were thinking along the same lines, and didn’t yet have an author. IELTS Foundation was published in 2004.
Since then I have written a number of Student’s Books for Macmillan Education, Pearson and now Oxford University Press, as well as Teacher’s Books, Workbooks, photocopiable worksheets and a digital course (MyLab) for PET (Preliminary Test of English).
I pretty much write full time now, though I do teach in short blocks in the summer, or occasionally as a cover teacher. The learning curve has been enormous, and I certainly wish ELT Teacher 2 Writer had been around when I was starting out.
