      TO BE A WRITER

      The Instant Tricks

      A. How to Start Writing?

      Many people always think that writing is difficult. It is wrong! Writing will be fluently and normally, even easy, if we practice and practice. When I am writing, especially fiction, as though I am looking a large screen of cinema. I look at the scene or the episode in the movie, of course, it is only an imagination. Yep, it is like a dream! Then I translate my imagination or my dream on my writing. How I do that? At the same time I am pressing the keyboard of typewriter or computer.

      The beginners usually asks how to start writing. After sitting in front of a typewriter or computer they are often confused: What should I write first? The idea is already in the mind, but hesitate to write. To overcome the impasse, please, quickly to write whatever! Start by writing about something. Please, typing and typing! The function of writing whatever as a stimulant sentence. When we have a stimulant sentence, we will smoothly to write the next sentence. Example, when I am already sitting in front of the typewriter or computer, I am typing:

      My God, the dog ran after me.

      Remember, at that time I have set the options, I want to write a short story, poem, or article. If I want to write a short story, I continue the sentence to be as below:

      My God, the dog ran after me. I ran to the house. I am lucky, there was a wood. So, when the dog should bite me, I beat it’s head by wood fastly. The dog howl in pain and ran away. ….. (etc)

      What must I do when I want to write a poetry? It was easy. I am typing:

      My God, the dog ran after me

      Hunting my breathing

      Rip my blood

      …… (etc)

      B. Write Title at The Last

      As we made the title at the beginning, our mind will be imprisoned by the title. So, write the title at the last, in order we do not confined with the title. Remember, the title is not theme or topic. Therefore, when you on writing do not thinking about the title. Please, ignore the title. It is the last business.

      C. Previously, Remove Reference Books

      Maybe we need reference in writing, but as we start to write, please remove reference books, clippings, or others. If we already held the reference from the beginning, we are not free anymore, not creative, and imprisoned. When I am writing, although I know that I need a reference, I ignore it. At first, I write and write. My writing is pure my mind. When I considered that my writing is finish, even though only a draft, I read it and looked for which the part of my writing need a reference. So, do not held reference at the beginning.

      D. Punctutiation

      In the writing, punctuation is very important but the beginners are often difficulties in placing punctuation. They are often confused to put exclamation marks, commas, periods, quotation marks, etc. Maybe, when you read magazine, books, novel, and others, you just only read and read. You never take any anttetion to the punctuation. Actually, the punctuation is very vital for the writer existence. As a beginner, you must always practice how to write the punctuation by repeat and repeat. As a learning, you can imitate senior writer how to post the punctutiation. Basically, it is have been teach at school as a grammar.

      E. Confuse to Make New Paragraph

      To be easily to make a new paragraph you can be guided by people who is speaking. While we are speaking, certainity, there is breath taking as a pause. Make a breath taking to write a paragraph! It is only the easy way. You can forget it while you have fluently in writing. See the example below:

      Breath 1 (paragraph 1)

      Snake is a carnivore and poisonous reptile. But there are also non venomous snakes that are harmless. But snakes are not poisonous type very little.

      Breath 2 (paragraph 2)

      Tree snakes are poisonous snake. Called tree snakes as always throughout his life on the trees. Tree snakes color are green such as leaf. Tree snake can disguise from its prey. The length of tree snake around one meter. Its favorite food is bird eggs, baby birds, and tree frogs.

      The example contains two core: snakes in general and tree snake. But you can unite as a paragraph.

      When we write the dialogue, the beginning word that come out of each character become a new paragraph. Example:

      "Yes! the lion said. But with a condition. If you are willing to meet the requirements, I will give you the prize!"

      "What is the requirements?" the heron asked unpatienly.

      F. About Space

      While you send a manuscript to magazine or newspaper, if it is as a hard copy, the distance between the lines is 2 spaces. The margin of left and right paper at least 1.5 cm. The margin of the top and bottom of paper at least 2 cm. It is to give correction place. The rule does not apply if you send a manuscript in soft copy (as floppy disks or by email).

      To write a short story or article, you must know how much the character quota. For example, I send short story script to Kompas (a daily newspaper in Indonesia), the requirements for short story is 10,000 characters including spaces. This is equivalent to five pieces of quarto size paper with 2 spaces. If my short story number of character is far above the quota, it is does not fit with the page of newspaper. Meanwhile, if my short story script only 8,000 characters, the page is more empties. So that the script is less or exceed of the quota it will removed, never published. How do I calculate the number of character? If your computer program to write is Microsoft Word, click the Review, and then click the Word Count, then see the Character (with space). Well, there have been visible to the amount of letters.

      G. The Setting Place Never Visited

      Do you have to go to Japan when you want to write a story with a Japanese setting? Actually, it is not a condition because you could only find references about the Japanese. Indeed, you must be smart in imagine, as though you in Japan. Note the names of the station, terminal, airport, city, buildings, traditions, etc, which support your story. We can learn from the experience of DR. Karl May, the author who born in Germany. His masterpiece novels told about Old Shaterhand and his Indian closed friend, Winnetau.

      The novels, as though, describe that Kary May had experienced adventure directly, because the illustrate of the place as story setting was very details. Do you know that it was only his imagine, he never came to the place. Karl May had never set his foot in the places. It was said that he became an author when he was in jail. Cause he was a boaster the warden became interested. One day the warden brought a typewriter for him and said, Do you like to write your boast? Write it, please! It was a lucky, his novel became best seller. Actually, he just only had map, reference books, and a knowledge of the running horse speed. Indeed, after he was a rich man, he toured to anywhere.
