Noble the Prehistoric Mouse was written for children, but it can be enjoyed by booklovers of all ages.
INTRODUCTION
A very long time ago the Earth was ruled by the Animal Kingdom. Some animals, such as the Wooly Mammoth, were very large. Other animals, such as Mice and Toads, were very small. Living side by side with the animals were the reptiles, who were the direct descendants of Dinosaurs.
Our story deals with a brave little mouse named Noble. Noble’s home is located in a field at the edge of the Great Forest. When Noble was just a little mouse, he was repeatedly told that he must never venture into the Great Forest. It was common knowledge in Noble’s village that the Great Forest was an extremely dangerous place.
Born with an unyielding curiosity and a spirit of adventure, it is Noble’s adventure into the Great Forest that brings this story to life.
CHAPTER 1
(In The Beginning)
Noble had a very happy childhood. He loved to play games, especially hide-and-seek. When it was his turn to hide, Noble liked to burrow into the sand. When a playmate was close by, he would jump high into the air with a loud squeak. Noble thought it was great fun to scare his playmates.
All the village mice had daily chores. Rock hunting was very important. Rocks were very hard and they could be used to fight off predators. The most important rocks were Spark Rocks.
When struck together, spark rocks made bright sparks. Sparks could start a fire, which was very useful to the village.
Noble’s favorite pastime was sitting around the village fire at night to hear the Village Elders tell stories. The Elders were masters of suspense. They would begin by speaking very softly, no louder than a whisper. By the end of the story, they were often on their feet, waving their arms and shouting. Sometimes this startled the little mice, but story time was often downright exciting.
Noble’s favorite story was a mystery about the missing villagers who disappeared long, long ago. As the story went, the colony was once split into two halves. One half stayed in the fields and the other half ventured into the Great Forest, never to be seen again. When Noble asked why his village didn’t send search parties into the Great Forest, the answer was always the same.
It would be too dangerous. No mouse has ever gone into the Great Forest and come back again.
Noble imagined himself venturing into the Great Forest and solving the mystery of the missing villagers. He thought it would really be exciting.
Noble was a good little mouse. He was very smart and it was clear to everyone that he was born with a spirit of adventure. When a volunteer was needed for a dangerous assignment, Noble was always the first in line. Noble was also a crack shot with a slingshot, a mouse’s first line of defense against predators.
As Noble grew older, he had serious thoughts about exploring the Great Forest. What if I could solve the mystery of the missing villagers? I’ve heard stories about the dangers, but the stories are as old as Methuselah Mouse.
He tried talking to his friends about exploring the Great Forest, but they thought it was a bad idea.
It’s dangerous and it’s silly,
said one of his friends. You could get lost and you might hurt yourself.
Noble was still convinced that exploring the Great Forest would be a wonderful adventure. If he could find any clues about the missing villagers, he was sure the Village Elders would be pleased.
Noble finally made up his mind to explore the Great Forest. He put his slingshot under his belt and filled his backpack with grain. The last thing he did was write a note to the Village Elders to explain why he was leaving.
Dear Village Elders,
I am leaving the village to explore the Great Forest. Hopefully, I will find some clues about the missing villagers who disappeared from our village a long time ago. I will be very careful, so please do not worry about me.
Noble
Noble’s plan was to start each morning with the sun at his back. When he camped at night, the sun would be setting in front of him. Noble thought it would be wise to travel in a straight line. If he didn’t, he might end up wandering all over the place.
Noble started out the next morning as soon as the sun came up. It wasn’t long before his village disappeared from view and the tall field grass got shorter and shorter. The tall trees that Noble had only seen from a distance were now directly over his head. The trees were so close together that they almost blotted out the sun. There were many strange sounds and Noble tried not to be afraid.
I must keep a watchful eye for any predators that might try to attack me, he told himself.
Living off grain and wild berries, Noble traveled until the sun had set many times. At night, Noble had to find a safe place to sleep. A spot in the undergrowth covered with sharp thorns was always the safest. Noble knew he wasn’t alone. There were always strange noises and he knew that danger might be just one step away.
Early one morning, Noble spotted a strange creature in the sky. It had gigantic wings, a small head, and it seemed to sail through the air. Noble immediately hid in the brush. Noble wasn’t the only one that was hiding. Next to him were two small frogs and a large toad. Noble figured that they were hiding from the strange creature in the sky.
Noble turned to one of the frogs and asked, What was that strange creature?
That was a flying Bat Lizard,
one of the frogs replied.
That’s a strange name,
said Noble. The creature looks very dangerous.
Actually, its correct name is Bat-O-Dactyl and they are extremely dangerous,
the toad said. They will eat you if they catch you.
Noble shuddered at the thought of being eaten. He knew he would have to be very careful as he traveled through the Great Forest.
The toad looked at Noble and asked, What kind of a creature are you?
Noble replied. I’m a mouse. I’m exploring the Great Forest and looking for other mice like myself.
The toad had some good advice for Noble. Be very careful as you move deeper into the Great Forest. There are many hungry creatures like the Bat-O-Dactyl. I have even heard tales of a Saber-Tooth-Meow.
Noble’s eyes opened wide. What’s a Saber-Tooth-Meow?
A large, cat-like creature with two long fangs,
the toad answered.
Noble had never heard of a cat, but the creature sounded really dangerous. He had a strange feeling that a cat and a mouse could never be friends.
