This book offers a brief overview of how to help your puppy get to sleep. Puppies, being young and in a new home, may have trouble sleeping. Since you want to sleep at night, you want the puppy to do so as well. In this book, the author has gathered a collection of tips that you can use to make your puppy more relaxed. It’s a short book; it took me 45 minutes to read it through. Many of the tips are things we’ve seen before, such as placing a ticking clock under your puppy’s pillow to mimic the beating of his mother’s heart. Simple things like that are good advice. Most self-published books run into the same problem – a lack of thorough editing. This one is no exception. There are many grammatical and sentence tense issues that need correction. Spelling was not a huge issue, but grammar was. There was conflicting information given in some places. For example, in an early chapter, the author advises you to use bath therapy to relax your puppy, but does not indicate that this should not be done nightly. In a later chapter, the author indicates that too-frequent bathing can lead to skin problems. A simple error of omission could lead a new puppy owner to inadvertently do something that could cause discomfort. As with any book not written by a veterinarian, take all advice given here with caution and consult a secondary source. Your own vet can give you good advice as to what’s safe for your new puppy. Never accept a single source’s advice about the use of herbal remedies with puppies. Many animals suffer from allergies. It’s best to consult your vet before using these remedies. That being said, there is a lot of good advice in the text. Give your puppy his own space, train him to go outside to use the bathroom, don’t scream at him or punish him, etc. There are tips for selecting the right kind of bed for your puppy. The last chapter is a FAQ section for new puppy owners. There were some awkward word usages. For instance, going to the bathroom was referred to as “doing the dirty.” There is really no need to use colloquialisms in a book like this. Puppies urinate and defecate. We don’t need to refer to these functions in terms that we use when talking to children. Overall, I found it an interesting, if brief, book. Not a bad effort, but it needs some editing throughout. This is not a stand-alone puppy training book. If you are a new puppy owner, use this book in conjunction with other reputable sources and you should do fine raising your new pup.
