Fertility Walk - Tamara Tobias
day.
Introduction
I understand all too well how difficult and painful the fertility journey can be. I also appreciate how overwhelming the barrage of medical information, terms, and ultrasounds can be. Although your intended path to parenthood may not be what you envisioned, you CAN achieve the family you desire.
The purpose of this book is twofold. I would like to help you gain a sense of control by better understanding your ultrasounds, menstrual cycle, treatment options, and procedures. We will discuss abnormal findings such as a cyst or fibroid and then all those questions that arise when a cycle IS successful. The back of this book has a list of common abbreviations used in reproductive medicine, included because all of the acronyms we use every day may be new to you. I hope to guide you through the process with easy-to-comprehend explanations and pictures. I am a visual person, and I know pictures really enhance my own learning.
My other intention is to walk with you along your journey because you are not alone. I can imagine all of the questions and worries that may be going through your mind, and I want you to think of me as a friend. I truly can relate to all of those mixed emotions, the good days and the bad days, and the days when you feel like just giving up. I remember asking myself, why me?
After personal experience and working with so many women and couples who have struggled with infertility, just like you, and I am here to tell you there is hope.
The journey of infertility can be depicted in a variety of metaphors. It can be likened to a winter storm (wild, unexpected, frightening), a funeral (death of hopes and dreams), even a never-ending roller coaster (breathtaking and out of control). Maybe you can relate to these descriptions written by others on the infertility journey:
Infertility feels like you are broken
Infertility feels like a constant reminder that life is not fair
Infertility feels lonely
Infertility feels out of controli
My goal is to help you envision the journey of infertility as a walk. And although the definition of walk
implies regularity and consistency, the walk we will take together will include many types of walking:
Plod: walk slowly and heavily, as if reluctant or weary
Prance: walk joyfully, as if dancing or skipping
Stumble: walk clumsily or unsteadily, or trip
Tiptoe: walk carefully on the toes or on the balls of the foot, as if in stealth
Truthfully, the trail we follow through infertility is not an easy one. We will stumble and fall, meander at times, and occasionally skip with joy. The key is that you will not be alone and you won’t be without your walking tools; the following chapters are meant to serve as your compass, map, and mile markers. And me? Well, I’m your walking partner. As we take this walk together, my ultimate intention for you is to find HOPE…
Hope to alleviate fears and uncertainties
Hope that you move forward on your journey
Hope that your dreams will come true
Hope that you will find peace within yourself
Let’s go take a walk…
Let’s take a walk into the woods where I found the hope to get me through my journey.

What to Expect at Your Fertility Consultation
Break Trail: (verb) – In winter, to hike in the lead position, forcing one’s way through untrammeled snow. It is far easier to walk in the tracks of someone else who has already broken
the trail.i
The infertility walk is not a new one; many have blazed the path before you and broken the trail. Whether you are freezing your eggs for fertility preservation or you have been trying to get pregnant for the last several months, or even years, you have taken a step in their tracks by reading this book or by making your initial appointment. Studies have shown that many people struggle with reproductive issues, but so many never reach out to make that first appointment or may never talk about it with others. Being able to conceive is supposed to come naturally,
and it is heartbreaking when attempts at pregnancy are unsuccessful or when our biological clock cannot wait.
The fertility journey is not easy, especially when the path isn’t clearly marked. The stress of disappointment, worry, and confusion can render us immobile if we let them. Studies have looked at why people discontinue treatment when they have a good chance of pregnancy or even when fertility treatments are covered by insurance. They have found that people often give up along their journey because of the intense psychological or emotional burden. I strongly encourage you NOT to give up and talk to someone whether it is your provider, nurse, or coordinator about your concerns. Although your intended path to parenthood may not be what you had envisioned, you CAN achieve the family you desire.
Initial consultation
Your initial visit will most likely include a consultation with your provider to review your medical history, prior evaluation, and treatments you may have already done. A review of your partner’s history (if applicable) will also be assessed.
This initial appointment may take 1-2 hours, so allow enough time in your schedule so you are not rushed. Additionally, some offices may perform a vaginal ultrasound and blood tests at your first visit even if you have recently done
