A Plastic Exercise - Lázaro Droznes

    A Plastic Exercise

    SCENE 1. NATALIO BOTANA’S OFFICE

David Siqueiros, tall handsome man with sallow skin, seems 37 years of age and Natalio Botana, who is short, stout and a little overweight is 45 years old, they are sitting in a desk which reveals economic prosperity.

    BOTANA

    Cigar?

    SIQUEIROS

    Not now, thanks.

    BOTANA

Take it. You can smoke it later, relaxed.

    BOTANA

    Whisky?

    SIQUEIROS

I never drink in the morning. If I start now I won’t be able to stop.

    BOTANA

How is the subject of your visa working out?

    SIQUEIROS

I got one for three months.

    BOTANA

You don’t have much time. What brings you here?

    SIQUEIROS

I want you to help me get the silos from Puerto Madero to make a mural.

    BOTANA

The state has full ownership of those silos and they won’t give them away. We are not in México.

    SIQUEIROS

We have to take art out of the museums and bring it to the masses. From Critica you could get one of those open spaces.

    BOTANA

The social ideas of the artist have nothing to do with his art.

    SIQUEIROS

We need to liberate painting from academicism and art-purism.

    BOTANA

Those are a lot of isms in the same sentence.

    SIQUEIROS

You support the communists, the anarchists, help my cause too.

    BOTANA

I support the communists and the anarchists to sell papers.

    SIQUEIROS

You want to seem much worse than you really are. There is romanticism in what you do in that newspaper, and lots of it.

    BOTANA

Look, here the State doesn’t care about painters. We paint generals and presidents and hang the paintings in the livingroom.

    SIQUEIROS

Art has an imperative social and political categorical.

    BOTANA

If it is put under the service
