A Little Lore Goes a Long Way

About this ebook
All Harmon Crane wants is a Loreist who knows the Lore — is that too much to ask? Instead, he's stuck with Mort. And then there's the trio's useless leader, Jaffrey.
The World they've traveled to, which is supposed to (according to Mort) have loads of treasure within, is actually empty. To make matters worse, trouble is waiting for them back on the other side of the Portal.
Then things get REALLY bad, but only Harmon realizes what's about to happen. Which is strange, because HE'S NOT EVEN THE GROUP'S LOREIST!
If he survives the day, it might just be time to find a new adventuring crew.
A fantasy short story set in the Worlds of Adventure. Approximately 5000 words.

Alpert L Pine lives and writes in a small cabin, off the grid, in the Northwest United States. Once per week, he treks to the nearest town on foot—rain, snow or shine—and spends the day transferring his material into a digital format, with the help of the kindly librarians whom he has befriended. When he's not writing, he spends much of his time with a metal detector, looking for a rumored Templar treasure which is said to be buried somewhere nearby. To date, he's found a few nails, an old Liberty head penny, and a strange amulet. For free stories, news about past and future releases, and more, visit his website: AlpertLPine.com

The gaping wound gushed blood. The greenbear stumbled, roared in agony, and collapsed to the ground with a dust-raising crash.
Harmon Crane slid his blade, still crackling with the energy he imbued upon it, back into its scabbard. He turned to Mort with a look of disgust. No greenbears in this world, eh?
The chubby Loreist harrumphed. He crossed his arms and turned away from Crane.
Our Loreist needs to find another line of work,
Crane muttered. He brushed past the scowling man and walked a few paces away.
The green grass stretched out ahead of them, marking the way back to the Exit. Overhead, a brilliant sun shone bright in the clear blue sky. It was a nice world. Except for the treasure that hadn't been there. And the greenbears which had.
Maybe if we search the forest again,
suggested Mort.
Crane looked back over his shoulder towards Jaffrey. The other man—their supposed leader—still hadn't spoken up. When he saw Crane staring at him, he turned quickly away.
