About this ebook

Will Parsons is part of a small UN team sent to the Democratic Republic of Congo to investigate a series of bizarre happenings. Entire villages have been mysteriously abandoned, the occupants of these remote villages seeming to disappear without a trace.

The local military man, Ndobe Ngeralt, believes the disappearances are the work of a witch, whom he claims lives in the rough, rocky hills north of the city of Mbuji-Mayi.

Doubting any such supernatural explanation, Will fears he may have stumbled across something even worse: a new, horrifying infection, with symptoms disturbing enough to cause entire villages to simply be left empty, abandoned by any survivors.

What they ultimately discover is the stuff of nightmares.

A short horror story of approximately 9000 words.

Alpert L Pine lives and writes in a small cabin, off the grid, in the Northwest United States. Once per week, he treks to the nearest town on foot—rain, snow or shine—and spends the day transferring his material into a digital format, with the help of the kindly librarians whom he has befriended. When he's not writing, he spends much of his time with a metal detector, looking for a rumored Templar treasure which is said to be buried somewhere nearby. To date, he's found a few nails, an old Liberty head penny, and a strange amulet. For free stories, news about past and future releases, and more, visit his website: AlpertLPine.com

    The Witch of Mbuji-Mayi

I stood beside the FARDC sergeant, Ndobe Ngeralt, who was tall and thin like a young tree, skin dark as coffee beans. His green camo uniform was loose-fitting, unadorned, and there was a matching cap on his head. He held an automatic rifle. We watched as other men from the military of the Democratic Republic of Congo, those troops serving beneath Ndobe, went from hut to hut, searching.

Is same like last village, Mr. Parsons said my companion, his English accented. And village before.

    Abandoned?

He shook his head in an affirmative manner.

Well, people don't just vanish, I told him. I mean, they must have left. Gone somewhere else.

No where. No sign. Last time, time before. Just gone.

A warm breeze blew across my damp skin, cooling me down momentarily. I stood, arms crossed, and watched the men work, calling out to each other in their native tongue, finding no one anywhere in the small village. At least twenty or thirty structures, I figured. No kids running about, no animals or livestock, no cook fires, no anything. Like the last time, and the time before. As if they'd just been scooped up and carried off somewhere.

The local people had first sought help from the provincial government, whom then appealed to the Congolese government; they in turn requested aid from the African Union, who finally asked for UN assistance after the entire population of the fourth or fifth tiny village had simply disappeared without a trace. The UN sent me and my team out to assist the locals, and to help determine what was happening. Four of us altogether, to investigate cases in two provinces; this wasn't exactly registering as a major priority at the United Nations. But something was going on. Was this some sort of mass kidnapping? By whom? A sudden migration? But if so, why? And to where?

What do you think? I asked Ndobe. I mean, where do you think the people went?

The tall man slouched much of
