    Who Were the Ancient Egyptians?

The civilization of ancient Egypt lasted for about 3,000 years, from around 3100 BCE until 30 BCE. A civilization is an organized society with rules and customs. We know a lot about ancient Egyptian life from objects that archaeologists have found. These include mummies, treasure, and amazing buildings such as pyramids, temples, and obelisks. All of these finds have survived for thousands of years in the Egyptian landscape.

    How did the civilization begin?

Before 3100 BCE, small groups of people lived in the area of ancient Egypt. Around 5500 BCE, some groups began to build small settlements near the Nile River. They started growing food in the river valley. The villages were grouped into two kingdoms: Upper Egypt and Lower Egypt. In 3100 BCE, these two kingdoms joined together, and this was the start of the ancient Egyptian civilization.

How was ancient Egyptian society organized?

The pharaoh was at the top of society. He was the king, and Egyptians believed he was a living god. The pharaoh had a team of important men to organize parts of society, such as the army, religion, and law. At the bottom of society were poor farmers, who worked on the land, and slaves. Slaves were not paid for their work.

    DID YOU KNOW?

Ancient Egypt’s picture writing remained a puzzle for hundreds of years. Then, in 1799, a Frenchman found a slab of rock at a place called Rosetta. This slab was covered in writing that helped people to understand the writing on some buildings. This sparked a lot of interest in ancient Egypt, and many adventurers came to the area looking for new discoveries.
