About this ebook
Giancarlo Baghetti was the son of a Milan, Italy industrialist whose family fortune was instrumental in his rise to prominence in Formula 1 racing in the early 1960s. Giancarlo was selected by the FISA organization to drive one of the Dino Ferrari prototype cars that it had acquired on loan from the Modena factory. It was a good choice because Giancarlo proved how good a race driver he was almost immediately, winning the 1961 Rheims Grand Prix. Unfortunately the Italian driver's career was never the same after he left to drive for ATS, a team begun by mechanics who defected from Ferrari in 1963. Aside from some success racing touring cars Baghetti was reconciled to working with poor equipment until his 1967 retirement.

The son of a wealthy Milan, Italy industrialist Giancarlo Baghetti (1934-1995) was born on Christmas Day 1934. His family fortune gave Giancarlo access to the best machinery on his trek to Formula 1. He raced Formula 1 cars for the Ferrari, ATS, BRM, Brabham and Lotus teams.
With the help of a local mechanic named Angelo Degrada, Giancarlo prepared a car for the Mille Miglia. Baghetti and his brother finished second in the historic Italian road race. By 1959 Giancarlo was racing touring cars after he was signed by Carlo Abarth (November 15, 1908-October 24, 1979).
Victorious in the 19th Naples Grand Prix in May 1961 Baghetti became one of only three drivers to win a World Championship race in their initial try. The others are Dottore Emilio Giuseppe Nino Farina (October 30, 1906-June 30, 1966), who won the 1950 British Grand Prix, and Johnnie Woodrow Parsons (July 4, 1918-September 8, 1984), who captured the Indianapolis 500 in 1950. The Indy 500 was included in the World Championship of motor sports from 1950-1960.
