About this ebook

Richie Ginther like his fellow Californian, Phil Hill, was a Formula 1 driver of significance in the 1960s. Both were from Granada Hills, California. Hill won the 1961 World Championship of Formula 1 Driving in 1961 while Ginther's one and only F1 victory came at the Mexican Grand Prix, driving a Honda in 1965. Ginther drove for Ferrari and BRM as well as for the Japanese automaker. He entered motorsports as the Ferrari #3 driver, behind Hill and German Wolfgang von Trips. Ginther befriended Hill in the 1950s as a friend of Phil Hill's brother. He soon joined Hill as a mechanic for the Ferrari sports cars he drove in California races.

Paul Richard Richie Ginther was a Granada Hills, California native, born there on August 5, 1930. Ginther and 1961 World Formula 1 Champion were from the same town. Hill was instrumental in prompting Richie to become involved in racing. Phil was a friend of Ginther's older brother.

Richie worked with his father at Douglas Aircraft in Los Angeles after finishing school in 1948. In his free time Ginther worked with Phil Hill, helping him repair and race his collection of vintage cars and hot rods. Richie continued in this endeavor until he was drafted for service for the Korean War. Trained as an aircraft and engineering mechanic, he made use of these skills in his auto racing career.

When his military hitch was up Phil Hill got Richie to agree to join him as a riding mechanic for his 4.1 liter Ferrari. He entered it in the 1953 Carrera Panamericana. Hill ended up crashing the Ferrari after he losing control of it in the race. Neither Hill or Ginther was hurt and both returned to capture second place in the 1954 Carrera Panamericana. Richie started racing his own cars by 1954. He most often raced an Austin Healey he had tuned to compete himself. So impressive was his success that in 1955 John von Neumann, a Porsche and Volkswagen dealer, hired him to drive a Porsche that was entered in American races.

28-year-old Richie Ginther of Los Angeles offered his opinion about the increased frequency of highway traffic accidents incurred by American drivers. He assessed the problem resulted from American auto manufacturers taking more and more of the work out of driving.

It's easy to start thinking about something else when your car has automatic transmission, power brakes and power steering, he said. Some new cars even have a device to set the accelerator at certain speeds for highway
