A Perfect Day In San Francisco

    9.00am

    Breakfast

There are two potential ways to start the day: espresso and pastries at classic Caffe Trieste (601 Vallejo Street) or heartier fare at La Boulange (543 Columbus Avenue) in North Beach.

    10.00am

    Steep hills, stupendous views

Stroll across Washington Square then climb Telegraph Hill to Coit Tower. Be sure to view the 1930s murals inside before ascending the elevator for one of the city’s most magnificent views. Afterwards, walk down the Filbert Street steps with exquisite views of the Bay, to Montgomery Street (or as far as Sansome Street if you feel ambitious) and back.

    11.30am

    To Chinatown

Meander down Grant Avenue past one-of-a-kind boutiques in North Beach to Chinatown’s quirky shops. Then feast on savory Chinese dumplings at Delicious Dim Sum (752 Jackson), where the food is really good.

    2.00pm

    Cable car

Hop on a cable car two blocks west at Mason Street and ride past Nob Hill and Union Square. Jump off downtown at the Powell and Market Street turnaround, usually busy with street performers.

    4.30pm

    YB Gardens

Cross Third Street in front of the museum to the delightful Yerba Buena Gardens. Roam the gardens and be sure to visit the serenely beautiful Martin Luther King Jr. memorial waterfall. If you need refreshments, relax on the outdoor terrace of Samovar Tea Lounge (730 Howard Street) above.

    5.30pm

    Mega mall

If you have unfulfilled shopping needs, the Westfield San Francisco Centre, with almost 200 shops has it all.

    6.00pm

    Saloon drinks

Step into another era for a pre-dinner cocktail at the friendly Gold Dust Lounge that has been serving libations in Union Square since the end of Prohibition.

    7.30pm

    F-line to Zuni

Board a restored vintage streetcar and zip up Market Street to Zuni Café (for more information, click here) for dinner at this beloved San Francisco culinary institution that serves market-fresh Mediterranean-inspired cuisine. Be sure to book reservations early!

    10.00pm

    Hit the bars

After dinner at Zuni, you are well situated for a night on the town. Grab a taxi and head south to the bohemian Mission bars, SoMa nightclubs, or the lively Castro scene, or take a taxi or bus west to trendy NoPa and the eclectic bars that line Haight Street.

    Introduction

Earthquakes aside, there’s just no shaking off San Francisco. One of America’s favorite cities, San Francisco clings to your soul, as irresistibly as a yen for the good things in life, or a song that won’t vacate your head. The ballad may be syrupy, but so many millions of people have left their hearts in San Francisco that you can’t fight it: the City by the Bay incites love at first sight – a love that lasts.

    Hills and Thrills

The first astonishment is the setting. So many thrillers have been filmed in San Francisco that the hills look as familiar as home; and yet it turns out that the cameramen didn’t need trick lenses; the hills are just as giddily steep as in the movies. Officially, 43 hills stand up to be counted, most famously Nob, Russian, Telegraph, and Twin Peaks. From these vantage points
