    Chapter One

Driving across the country had not given her the escape she'd hoped for from the torturous sense of failure.

Dr. Vivian Buchanan knew what she was doing. Theoretically understood it. She was on the run because her husband's death in a plane crash should have left her feeling something other than the incredible sense of relief coursing through her veins. But it hadn't.

Wondering about the ad from one of her medical journals while she'd stood at Brock's graveside had gotten her through the crush of media and mourners she'd happily left behind. Practice for sale. Seeking Physician for established rural Family Practice in beautiful Rosewood, Oregon.

For a while she'd been vaguely curious about getting back into medicine, but had eventually discarded the idea. She didn't have experience in rural medicine, so the persistent idea that she should look into the country practice wasn't practical. But, the spark for getting as far from the fishbowl of her former life as possible was born. And even though the thought of making such a drastic change was more than a little daunting, in the end, it was either find a better life, or bury herself in the lie of being Brock's grieving widow.

So she'd left behind everything she'd known for the last three years, taking only the essentials—her step-daughter Jamie, and her unborn baby. But it turned out the West Coast was not far enough. And her last hope for peace was an imaginary house on a cliff overlooking the Pacific ocean. The little town she'd just driven into, perched in the foothills of Mt. Hood, one-hundred and twenty-three miles from Astoria was not that place.

Still, Main Street, Rosewood, Oregon, welcomed them, easing her pent up anxiety. Cherry trees flowered pink petals in the late winter sunshine. Quaint little shops lining both sides of the wide street, with parking angled in instead of along the curbside, advertised Valentine's Day.

Of course. It was two days before the holiday.

A cold shiver ran down her back. The red and pink hearts promised love would last forever, a fairy-tale told to gullible young girls who believed romance was all hearts and flowers. Thanks to Brock, she'd grown up and knew the truth. There was no such thing as innocent, fairy-tale love.

She stretched across the leather seat to wake Jamie.
