About this ebook

When Lucinda Jaffery's fiftieth birthday party is a total disaster, complete with secret crying jags in the ladies bathroom at the Dog and Duck Bar where her ex-Partner Liam still works, she decides to pursue her dreams with her four friends.
The women form a Fit at Fifty Club and pledge to exercise and socialise together from here to eternity.
Marianne signed up because she was frustrated with being in a dead-end job and had long dreamt of starting her own business, but never had the guts to really go for it.
Petra signed up but 'finding herself' was too boring so she drifted along in endless one night stands until she found The One, and started to really live, for the first time.
Susannah signed up because she'd searched for love the world over and almost gave up before she went to a Singles Night and met a random stranger who completely changed her life forever.
Four women with different experiences of love come together in a tale that inspires, delights, and cheers on the underdogs.

    About The Author

    Chapter 1

LUCINDA JAFFERY CHECKED HER face in the grime-smeared mirror in the toilets at the Dog and Duck bar in West London. It was her fiftieth birthday, and she should have been tits-up against the bar nursing a dry martini with her friends. Instead, she lamented having now joined the fit-at-fifty club. Now she was fifty years old Lucinda felt even more miserable, lonely, and exhausted with the tawdry business of seeking out weekly one-night stands.

Her friends were elated for each other as their birthdays came. Lucinda was the last of the group to turn fifty. They’d arrange to meet at the Bar every Friday night to catch up on the gossip and to put the world to rights, dependent on current affairs or whichever global crisis had occurred that particular week.

They would kick off their heels and dance until their bunions ached and all the good looking men had already left with their trophies in tow; either waif-like, leggy blondes, or curvy brunettes with impressive assets that gravity was still capable of holding up unaided. Often, a man would sidle up to Lucinda and dance with her. She reasoned that it was harmless, but if any of them attempted to get too close she’d fire a warning shot across the bow with her acerbic wit and sarcastic one-liners which stung long after Lucinda had made her exit in a cloud of Chanel Number 5.

At weekends, they’d meet up for yoga or Pilates classes but only so they could have cocktails in the bar downstairs afterwards.

Lucinda wiped her eyes gently and then re-applied her makeup quickly before her friends dared to come and seek her out. Her half-Asian heritage had given her a golden hued skin and she emphasised its beauty at every possible opportunity.

She made one last brush of her black shoulder-length hair with its distinctive Mallen streak of platinum on her right side.

Catherine Cookson, you’ve got a lot to answer for, she said to her reflection and tried to separate her necklace from her sweater’s cowl neck.

She returned to her friends who had collapsed around the table strewn with empty cocktail glasses and surveyed the crumpled up napkins, once filled with olives or cocktail onions from the bar. The bar staff were generous, and one in particular had a fondness for Lucinda. She turned to pull on her coat as Petra connected with her eye line.

Not leaving already are you? Let’s have one more round, Petra wailed. Lucinda mumbled that she had an early start the next day and had to get the bus home. Marianne looked at Lucinda’s face and then rushed over to her. She could see that Lucinda was upset. Her tear-stained faced was a dead giveaway.

Lu-lu, Marianne said, and then hugged her tightly, as Lucinda inhaled her friend’s
