Chapter One: Introduction
A Sentimental Journey Through France and Italy
by Laurence Sterne was first published in 1768. When the novel was published, Laurence Sterne was facing death.
In the year 1765, Sterne had gone on a journey through France and Italy. He even travelled to Naples. When he came back, he decided to write about his travels from a sentimental point of view.
The present novel is presumed to be an answer to Tobias Smollett’s Travels through France and Italy,
which was quite unsentimental. While travelling in Europe, Sterne had come across Smollett. He found the other person quite unpleasant. The character of Smelfungus is based on Smollett.
During the second half of the eighteenth century, travel writing became a dominant genre, thanks to the popularity gained by Sterne’s novel. A Sentimental Journey…
emphasized on the subjective discussions of personal liking and sentiments, unlike the earlier travel writings that wa highly objective, presented through non-personal point of view.
After the success of the present novel, throughout the 1770s, sensitive travel accounts began to be written by female writers. Sentiment became a kind of favorite style of the period.
The Reverend Mr. Yorick is the narrator of the book. He can also be interpreted as a kind of alter ego of the author. The narrative describes Mr. Yorick’ several adventures. The writing style is highly elegant, very much subjective with the inclusion of impressive personal sentiments.
It is noticeable that Sterne passed away one about three weeks after the publication of the book.
Chapter Two: Plot Overview
Mr. Yorick is the central character and narrator of the book. He begins his journey in Calais. At the beginning of his journey, he meets a monk on the way. The monk begs some money for his convent. Mr. Yorick does not want to give him anything at first, but he later regrets his decision.
He exchanges his snuffbox with the monk’s snuffbox. To continue his journey, he purchases a chase.
From Calais, he goes to Montreuil. It is the next town on the way. Since he needs help of someone
