Movement Primer - Femi Doyle-Marshall
Origins of the Primers: Introduction
This piece written has been a formulation of my work in commercial gyms, private training facilities, partnered health establishments, academic study in Kinesiology and interactions from those I come to know as friends being fitness and health professionals. It holds the information that I used in the past to formulate my current training philosophy, coaching systems and perspective of building New Persona into a premium lifestyle brand. I trust using anything mentioned in between the lines of these sheets with my clients. Have done so with my friends, family and even more with myself in the early testing phases. By taking the time to grasp the fundamentals of nutrition, movement and progressing towards whatever it is you are working for the outcome will be achieved.
Sections of this book is organized into the various types of movement. Each modifiable to what you want to see. The approach I use for movements is simple. If you like it then do it. It doesn't make sense wasting time on doing things you do not enjoy unless a greater meaning is behind it. Add variety to remove imbalances you might have, target weak areas of your body and aim primarily to become stronger. That is the method I have come to adopt. The key thing is to not complicate things more than it needs to be. Learn, try and apply. When you figure out what works for you from these pages then use them as your primer.
More steps as to which combinations fit well together are outlined as you go further into the content.
Precursor: What's your why?
I want you while you're reading this to gradually determine the reason you will be applying the principles. Are you aiming to put on more muscle bulk, reduce body fat, increase flexibility, improve mobility, become generally more healthy? Each would have a different combination of steps to be applied. I often found goals being scattered in the early stages of anything. Personally I found this because you have to play around with the variables to see what fits right with you. Do you like running, walking or swimming? Are you a fan of powerlifting, gymnastics or strongman type movement patterns? Are you prepared to combat mental hurdles? If you have a response already that's great. If not with time you will know. Understanding the purpose behind the content will make things a lot easier to follow through on while finding your why.
Everything takes time to develop. The process builds towards where you need to be once you engage in the action.
For example if your goal is to become healthier you could combine almost anything from the book. You may need to only start walking and performing basic bodyweight movements to see benefits in cardiovascular and musculoskeletal health.
By investing 5-7 minutes formulating your why can end up saving you a lot of time and energy in the future.
Being interactive with the movement primer process will allow you to grasp more information from the chapters and peak your gains far greater compared to only reading the text. Activity and learning produces the best results. Remember that.
