About this ebook

A man is found dead in a canal in Copenhagen. Preliminary indications suggest he drowned or died of hypothermia. Soon, however, the coroner confirms it was a murder. Inspector Leif Anders Pedersen starts his investigation.

Several clues lead him to a suspect who has well-founded reasons to have killed the victim and so the mystery murder seems to be solved.

Unfortunately, the following day the police finds another body in a boat stranded in another canal. The only thing in common between the victims is their Swedish nationality.

    Chapter 1

That day I was the first to arrive at the crime scene. Usually it was Erick who told me about each murder and came to pick me up.

However, this time it was different. Early in the morning, the switchboard received a phone call from a man who claimed to have found a dead body. The man asked the operator if he should take it out of the water or leave it as he found it until the arrival of the police.

The telephone operator asked the man to tie the corpse very carefully to the boat and asked him where he was.

A little later, we arrived at the canal in the District of Christianshavn where the witness had berthed his boat.

‘Good morning, inspector.  My name is Ludvig Mikkelsen. I was sailing towards the port when, suddenly, my boat hit something. I said to myself: ‘another bag of trash that someone has thrown into the canal!’ and I stopped the engine to pick up what I thought was a garbage bag. But I saw right away that it was a dead body.’

    ‘And then you called us...’

‘Yes. Believe it or not, I am a worthy citizen, inspector. Just so you know, I was born here in Copenhagen 60 years ago and never in my life have I lived anywhere else.’

‘Very well, Mr Mikkelsen. Can you tell us what you did after you called us?’

‘Of course, inspector. I did what you asked me to do. I carefully tied the corpse to the boat trying not to touch it. I was also asked to berth my boat and inform you where I was.’

‘And since you are a worthy citizen, you did everything as requested.’

‘You are absolutely right, inspector. I hope they soon will take the body away, I'm already tired of towing it...’

    ‘Where is it?’

‘Please, come with me and I’ll show you.’

Ludvig Mikkelsen asked me to climb the boat. As neither Harald nor Erick had arrived yet, I was alone at the crime scene and could rely only on the help of one of the local police officers called Jakob Schmidt.

When we got onto the boat, Mr Mikkelsen led me to the stern and pointed at a rope that was well-tied to a nail.

‘It’s here, inspector. The corpse is just below. Lean out and you will see it.’

I did what Mr Mikkelsen told me to do and in fact I saw a man floating in the water. The body was wrinkled and pale, no doubt, because it stayed in the water for so long. I could see that Mr Mikkelsen had tied a rope around the torso so that the swaying boat wouldn’t cause any injury to the body.

    ‘Are you happy, inspector?’

‘Yes, thank you, Mr Mikkelsen. I think the coroner, who should be here any minute now, will take the body right away. Now, please, give your statement to my colleague, inspector Grønkjær.’

‘Of course, inspector. Would you need anything more of me?’

‘Ah!... please, be informed that until the coroner confirms the approximate time of death of this man, you will be considered a suspect. So, please, do not leave Copenhagen. Give the inspector Grønkjær your address in case we need to talk to you. Oh! I can already hear the cars of my colleagues pulling up...’

‘Me as a suspect? You are wrong, inspector. I even have an alibi.’

‘Tell it to my colleague. He is already here.’

Erick arrived at the same time as Harald. I climbed the stairs and went to talk to them.

‘You are late. Did something happen? Something unexpected?’

‘Well, yes, Anders, we got a flat tyre and we had to change it, but we are not first-class mechanics. Let’s take away that body...’

‘Harald, don’t you want to have a look? Mr Mikkelsen, the fisherman who found the corpse, is on the boat and will show you where it is.’

    ‘Okay, let me see!’

Harald boarded the boat and Mr Mikkelsen showed him where the body was. In the meantime, I
