    Chapter One

    ––––––––

Lucy felt the crisp October air creeping into the schoolhouse, and pulled her cape over her shoulders. She finished assigning seat work for her students, and then placed another log in the wood burning stove. She warmed her hands for a minute, the flames drawing her in like a siren’s song. Staring at the fire often brought her mind back to the day that changed her life forever. It was so many years ago, yet still so vivid in her memory.

Lucy was hiding in the hay loft, trying to squeeze in a little more reading time before she finished the rest of her chores. At seven years old she was small enough to just fit in her favorite hiding place between the tallest haystack and the railing of the loft. It was quiet and peaceful there most of the time. But she was only in her second chapter when she heard the horses whinnying, and the other animals sounding restless. She lifted her head from her book, and then she smelled the smoke.

Lucy’s heart raced as she ran to the ladder to get down from the loft, but she saw flames at the base of the ladder swiftly moving throughout the barn.

She tried to scream, but couldn’t. She felt frozen, petrified. The book fell from her hand and landed on the floor below. The fire consumed the pages like a pack of wolves surrounding their newly caught prey. Lucy’s throat constricted. She felt helpless and afraid. What could she do? Where could she go? She prayed, Gott, please help someone find me.

Lucy spotted the window door and pushed on it ‘til it swung open. She peaked over the sill and looked down to the ground. It was so far! She was too scared to jump. She tried to yell out. She pictured herself yelling, but heard nothing. Her body would not respond to her thoughts. She grabbed the hay fork leaning against the stack and pounded as hard as she could on the loft
