A WARRIOR’S JOURNEY

Dave was an unrepentant Hippie nature child who firmly believed in such outdated concepts as peace, love, sustaining our Earth, and Freedom, including the inviolable right of the First Amendment. He worked as a writer, editor, and medical professional. He had been a newspaper reporter, photographer, Army combat medic, paramedic, and teacher. Two phenomenal women filled his life: his beautiful wife, Elizabeth, and their dog, Belle.
He journeyed on into the approaching dark,
Footsore from endless miles, head drooping from weariness,
aware only of the loneliness within.
Matted, dirty hair hung dankly—
too lost was he within sorrow’s prison
to care about outward things…
Things of no meaning.
For many days he had wandered thus.
Ever searching.
Finding nothing.
A soft whimper escaped his lips—
the only outward sign of his tortured soul
the Warrior would permit.
Thoughts of clan and tribe now entered
the Warrior’s mind
as he stumbled onward toward the encroaching night.
Lost in time and endless trek
were his People.
Now, only golden lupine eyes led him on.
Eyes he’d once looked into
and became lost.
Magickal eyes, which ensnared his heart
with velvet chains that could not be broken.
Eyes of deepest knowledge, of purest love…
lupine eyes.
‘Twas those eyes he now sought
with such devotion, such lonely diligence.
To lose himself once more in their timeless depth
his only quest.
Too weary, now, to continue this day,
he slowly scratched out a bed.
Circling slowly, head bowed,
he at last lay down.
Now he could give voice to his sorrow—
he howled his anguish into the uncaring night.
His sorrow. His aching loneliness
for lupine eyes.
At last, he looked around once more—
ensuring no danger lurked.
Then, assured, he curled his body around dreams
where, once again, he lived
the day of unbounded wonder
when into her eyes he first looked
and became ensnared in lupine eyes.
Once again, he felt the soft tickle of her hair
as she pressed close against him.
Once more smelled her scent, heard her song.
Reaching out in his troubled sleep, he felt her caress.
Earth wheeled in its eternal path
and sunlight once more burned his eyelids,
his dreams scattering like frightened geese—
hurrying to hide in subconscious shadow.
Reluctantly, he chased the dreams away,
yawned, and felt the keen edge of his loneliness
begin anew—honed afresh by his slumber.
Spurred by sorrow, goaded by unspoken urge
to continue his empty journey,
he opened his eyes
and again felt himself captured
by soft, beauteous, loving lupine eyes.
