I was born in Cambridge, Massachussetts. After living in Columbus, Ohio, for a few years, I moved to Richardson, TX, in 1978, when my father got a job teaching at UT-Dallas. I switched schools a couple times before settling back into the Plano schools and graduated from Plano Senior HS in 1990, Midwestern State (BA in History) in 1995, and UT Dallas (MA) in 2008. I am an aspiring writer, and my interests include movies (especially those from New Zealand), photography, Australian & New Zealand Wildlife, birds, spectator sports (I love baseball and attend Dallas area ball games), and I love to travel. 3 Worlds Journey is my first novel, and I am currently working on more. I love letting my imagination go wild. Most of my stories and characters are based on what I read and what I thought of when I was younger.

Chasing Courage-a Trio of Stories - Matt Kratz
Prologue
He looked around the room. It was its usual mess. He actually liked it that way!
He glanced at the picture on the wall. He had drawn it himself. It was Captain Greatness, his own creation. He had drawn him in his favorite pose-with the arms stretched over his head, head raised up, feet shoulder width apart. He had added lines underneath the feet and hands to indicate flight. The phrase To infinity-and beyond!
was already trademarked, so he came up with his own phrase for the Captain: To the stars! Here we come!
He liked the outfit he came up with: red tights, green cap, and a bike helmet. The Captain was the subject of a bunch of stories he had written. Of course he had written other stories on other stuff, too, like stories about a western town in 1880s Texas, but Captain Greatness was his Masterpiece.
He did sketches for all his stories too. The picture in his room was the one he used most often.
Captain Greatness guarded the town of Giles, also the author’s hometown, and fought a variety of villains, crime, and other things your typical superhero faced. He flew through the air, watched over the city like a hawk, swooped down to capture his prey, and loved what he did. Everyone loved him too.
Jerry?
The Captain was speaking to him. It was time.
Chapter I
Jerry Smith was seated at his usual seat in the Clinton High School cafeteria, writing in a notebook and eating a peanut butter and jelly sandwich. He was having his character do the same in the story he was writing.
Hey, Jer Bear. What’s up?
Sam Thornton, his best friend, was sitting across the table from him. Jerry really didn’t have many friends, but he counted Sam as quite possibly his best. He had known him since third grade.
Oh, just working on my latest story.
About Captain Greatness again?
Other stuff now. I’m not sure what else I can do with CG at the moment, but this is about something else.
Mind if I read it?
Sure thing.
Sam read a little bit of it. He liked most of it.
Have you ever let Mr. Alcox, the star creative writing teacher here at Clinton High, read your stuff?
Sam asked him.
Not yet. I do have a class with him next semester, though. I can’t wait to have him.
He’s terrific-trust me.
Thanks.
You should show your stuff to that girl you like so much, oh-what’s her name?
Sarah Jenkins? You know how much trouble I have talking to girls.
Yeah, but this could be different.
How? Even though she’s fairly new, she clicked immediately. She made the Drill Team and hooked up with quite a few people, and I’m still an ‘outsider’ where most people here concerned.
You never know if you don’t try. I could even help you if you’d like. I’ve talked to her a couple times, and she seems nice. Real down-to-earth. I’ll be there with you.
Okay, I’ll give it a shot. But I’ll need to practice first.
I’m Sarah. Give it a shot.
Not right now! Maybe later.
Sure thing,
said Sam with a smile. I’ll leave you to your work.
Thanks for your help.
Anytime.
As Sam got up and left, Jerry turned back to his work. He was loving his new story-he considered to be one of his best. It was about the President of the United States.
He would practice on talking to Sarah with two areas-in private, of course. Once with Sam, and once with-who else?-Captain Greatness!
He made it through lunch and the remainder of his classes. As he left school, he saw Sarah practicing with the Drill Team, dressed in a tight, form-fitting, blue leotard. He had always admired her from afar. She always seemed nice-he actually spoken to her once-but, as with just about all girls, he was to her like Charlie Brown and the Little Red Haired Girl, except she had long blonde hair.
Maybe someday I will get up the nerve to say more than a few words to her, he thought.
He headed back to his house and up to his room. His parents still weren’t home yet.
Girl problems, eh?
Captain Greatness had stepped out of his sketch on the wall and was standing next to him.
Oh, hey, Captain,
Jerry said. You know it.
All you need is to overcome your initial jitters,
the Captain told him. She probably feels the same way you do. In fact, I’m sure she likes you too. I think she’s been wanting to talk to you for a long time.
How do you know?
Captain’s intuition. I’m a superhero, remember?
Oh, yeah. How hard was that to remember?
I hope it wasn’t. Good luck with the girl. To the stars, here we come!
Indeed,
Jerry said with a faint grin.
Chapter II
Jerry was walking down the hallway to science class. As he turned around, he literally bumped into someone.
Oh, jeez, I am such a klutz!
He blurted out as books flew everywhere. I wasn’t looking where I was going. Let me get these-
It’s okay! I got this. By the way, I’m Sarah. Sarah Jenkins.
You’re the-
You must be Jerry Smith,
she said as they hurriedly collected their books and shook hands. I’ve been meaning to talk to you for a while. I can’t talk right now because I’m late to class, but if you meet me at lunch, we can talk then.
Okay, thanks! It’s a date!
They both then hurried off to their classes. As Jerry went to his class, he heard a familiar voice.
Did I just see what I think I did?
Oh, hi, Sam,
Jerry said. You might have. We just bumped into each other-literally-and agreed to meet later. It’s a start.
"Let me know if you need any advice on what to
