A horse! A horse! My kingdom for a horse!
~ Shakespeare
"First, you must trust in yourself.
Then you can also trust in the earth or gravity of a situation, and because of that, you can uplift yourself. At that point, your discipline becomes delightful rather than being an ordeal or a great demand. When you ride a horse, balance comes, not from freezing your legs to the saddle, but from learning to float with the movement of the horse as you ride. Each step is a dance, the rider's dance as well as the dance of the horse."
~ Chogyam Trungpa Rinpoche,Shambala: The Sacred Path of the Warrior
FOREWORD
Herbs have been used for centuries to treat various ailments in horses throughout the world from China to Europe. Numerous folklore tales abound about horses that responded to various herbs for different conditions. The integration of these old stories and herbal formulas with conventional western veterinary medicine and healing in the 21st century is challenging.
Maya and Barrie have combined their experiences and knowledge of the traditional use of herbs with some of the latest studies in western herbal medicine. They offer an intriguing combination of scientific, practical, energetic and traditional knowledge that portrays a rational use for herbs for horses.
Controversies abound in the use of herbs with horses. Some scientists feel that the individual principle active ingredient of herbs should be isolated and their mechanism of action completely understood prior to clinical use. However, many medications have been developed and clearly state that their mechanism of action is not clearly understood. Medical and pharmaceutical researchers and clinicians believe that the active principle of plants should be identified, extracted, purified and administered in specific dosages to ensure safety. Some feel that no herb should be used without double blind placebo controlled trials. Some herbs are potentially toxic to horses. All these considerations are certainly not unreasonable in an ideal world and in an ideal situation. From the opposite perspective, often well intended individuals may suggest old folk remedies for horses that they feel have withstood the test of time as far as efficacy and safety goes. They may feel that the folklore itself is sufficient justification for use. Personally, I feel that either extreme does not do justice to our equine companions. I feel that judicious use of herbs based on the various levels of evidence available may be of benefit to horses in particular situations for both prevention and wellness as well as therapeutically where appropriate.
However, it is not uncommon that one is in a situation where conventional medications are not working or are having side effects and where surgery is not a reasonable option. In situations like this, you should search for a veterinarian that is trained in herbal medicine for horses in order to assist you in deciding whether certain herbs or formula’s might be appropriate for your equine friend. There is a paucity of research on western herbs for horses, though more is becoming available. There is some research on Chinese herbal formulas for horses.
In an ideal world, there would be humanely conducted well-documented studies on all the various herbs that may be beneficial for horses. However, most research these days is conducted or supported by pharmaceutical companies which do not have any financial benefit or interest in studying herbs for horses, unless it is to develop a future medication. This is simply a matter of economics. Then we are caught in a catch-22
where we are often cautioned to not use certain herbs that have a reasonable record of safety and efficacy unless there are current and well-documented scientific studies and yet there is insufficient funding for appropriate studies. A reasonable balance between these concerns must be addressed.
In this book the combination of knowledge on old healing formulas
with some of the latest studies on the therapeutic and preventive use of various herbs for horses provides a great deal of useful information for both horse’s caretakers and veterinarians. Maya and Barrie have combined valuable information from around the world and through the centuries along with some of the latest research on herbal therapies. Judiciously placed throughout the book are some of the most beautiful quotes about horses I have ever read, making the reading and learning process much more enjoyable and intriguing. They combine the wisdom of the ages and various cultures with the heart of their love of both horses and herbs.
This book is an informative, valuable contribution to a small but growing volume of knowledge concerning the use of herbs for horse wellness and prevention. Read, learn and enjoy as they take you through a wealth of information that may well be of great benefit to you and your kindred spirits!

"Brahma was excessively sparing with earth, water, and fire. The new creature was not given either horns or claws, and his teeth were only meant for chewing, not for biting. The prudent care with which fire was used made him a necessity in war with out making him warlike.
This animal was the Horse.
The reckless expenditure of air and ether in his composition was amazing. And, in consequence, he perpetually struggled to outreach the wind, to outrun space itself. Other animals ran only when they had a reason, but the Horse would run for no reason whatever, as if to run out of his own skin. He had no desire to chase, or to kill, but only to fly on and on and on until he dwindled into a dot, melted into a swoon, blurred into a shadow, and vanished into vacancy.
The Creator was glad.
He had given habitations to his other creatures, forests to some, caves to others, but because of his enjoyment of the disinterested spirit of energy in the Horse, he gave him an open meadow under the eye of Heaven."
-- Rabindranath Tagore
INTRODUCTION
A horse is worth more than riches.
~ Spanish Proverb
This book celebrates the birth of an idea spun from creative minds devoted to herbalism, horses and other animals, and healing. It is exciting to bring good minds together. The three of us have greatly enjoyed our journeys and working together. We are women warriors and business women devoted to change. We are each Reiki Masters, practitioners of energy healing, and we each bring unique and different skills to this book, and our business of Earth Lodge Horse Herbals.
All of the pathways to healing have special interests for us as well as our animals. Scientific, clinical, practical, energetic, and spiritual often work together to perfect a positive outcome. We are fortunate to be living in this age of advances in complementary medicine that welcomes all forms of healing modalities that can work together in synchronicity. Our passion for horses is something that we share with most people around the world wherever horses have a role in making life better.
