Africa: The (Still) Undiscovered Continent
––––––––
The world’s second largest and second most populous continent, Africa has captured the fascination of people from all over the globe for many centuries now. With over one billion inhabitants, it is a booming part of our planet. It impresses with its rapid development, but also political instability. Ever since the massive explorations that took place in the 18th and 19th centuries, Africa has been split into three main parts: Northern, Central (or Sub-Saharan) and Southern. All three are unique and have numerous interesting spots to explore.
The Northern part coincides with what is commonly known as the Maghreb. The Mediterranean coast is inhabited by Arabic speaking Muslim populations that coexist peacefully in the livable parts of the Sahara desert. Tunisia, Morocco and Egypt are traditionally known as tourist destinations, but the local industry has been hit hard by the events that took place during and after the so-called Arab Spring. Egypt steals the show with the last surviving Wonder of the Ancient World, the Giza Pyramids, as well as its Red Sea coast – popular with tourists looking for relaxation. Tunisia and Morocco have mostly relied on cultural tourism to attract visitors looking for an insight into the Arab world close to home.
Sub-Saharan (Central) Africa is one of the wildest and remotest areas on the Earth – and, thus, one of the most interesting for fearless tourists looking for adventure. The main downsides of this part of the world are violent conflicts that often sweep the region, poor infrastructure and high costs of vacationing there. Sub-Saharan Africa is mostly known for its wildlife tourism. Nature parks, where one can explore the jungle or the savannah, attract numerous visitors every year. The cultural life of countries like Nigeria, Rwanda and Tanzania is highly impressive - with their local dances, architecture and way of life still waiting to be discovered.
Finally, Southern Africa is the continent’s most developed and, at the same time, most visited part. Safaris and wildlife exploration trips engage most of the tourists visiting the area. Countries like Kenya, South Africa or Botswana are relatively developed and host more and more visitors every year (nowadays, not only from Europe or North America). Major events, like the 2010 football world cup, have made the area even more popular.
Taken as a whole, Africa is definitely an interesting destination that sadly suffers some setbacks when it comes to infrastructure and social environment. Still, for the bravest of us, it can be an option for a perfect holiday.

The Land with Many Faces
––––––––
Settled on the northernmost spot in Africa, Tunisia has always been a welcoming land throughout the entire history of the world. Because of this, it has absorbed a lot of heritage from many different cultures.
If we had to say just one sentence about Tunisia at the moment, we would mention that this country, although beautiful and inhabited by great and pleasant people, is not safe for tourists at the present time.
The fact that there is chaos on the streets of some cities is a deal breaker for most tourists; many bookings are cancelled which naturally affects tourism. Tunisians are still recovering from the Arab spring and trying to stem the influence of extremists who use terror to force their views on the peaceful nation.
Once the chaos is over and peace has returned to Tunisia, as a guest you will be able to enjoy meeting great people with many interesting stories to share, sunbathe on nice, sunny beaches that are well equipped for beach tourism and are very popular, to visit museums and to sightsee archaeological discoveries.
The most sophisticated and history savvy visitors will certainly enjoy sightseeing as they will get to see some of the oldest archaeological spots found there over a century ago, presenting important Carthaginian remains, Roman buildings and Ottoman spas.
Another thing this country is well known for is its dainty food and great restaurants where you can taste hundreds of different international delicacies including the traditional cuisine which is mostly focused on fresh seafood
Let us all hope that Tunisia will soon get back to the peaceful times of past!

1. THE FLIGHT AND FIRST IMPRESSIONS

IMG_0051 w6––––––––
We were very lucky to have an opportunity to visit Tunisia some time ago during the peaceful years of this amazing and very special country.
It took about six hours to get to our destination by plane from Europe.
The flight was pretty comfortable and no one could complain about anything regarding the service. Still, throughout the voyage, some passengers on our aircraft felt bored of sitting and doing nothing so they began to entertain themselves by using their free time to eat enormous amounts of different types of junk food and drink alcoholic drinks, which resulted in a couple of very drunk men and a few people with digestive problems on board, until the arrival time.
The rest of the passengers were watching these odd occurrences as a good lesson in how one should not behave during a flight!
After we landed at the airport of Tunis and left the airplane, we were met with a very hot breeze; a large contrast to the cool and conditioned air we experienced during the flight.
There were some palm trees growing along the edge of the buildings. On our way to the entrance door of the checking out area, our attention was attracted by a huge black local cat with very beautiful and slanting bright-green eyes; he was proudly walking under one of the palms and his meows sounded to us like Welcome to Tunisia!
Our hotel representative met us inside the airport after we had picked up our luggage and passed the custom control desk. On the way to our accommodation, from the windows of the little bus, we were able to enjoy marvelous views of the neighborhoods and see lots of various kinds of blooming bushes along the roadsides.
The hotel was awesome and the staff people were caring and attentive, meeting every new guest with a glass of freshly-squeezed Citron juice served on a plate decorated with live orchids.
