Bob Moats

Detroit area resident, Bob Moats, has been writing short stories and plays for as long as he can remember. He has lost most of his original stories, typed or handwritten, in the numerous moves he has made from his hometown of Fraser, Michigan to Northern Michigan, to Las Vegas and back to Fraser, where he now lives. Moats became one of the causalities of unemployment a year ago, and had time on his hands to finally pursue a life long dream of writing a full blown crime novel. Thus was born the first book, "Classmate Murders".What followed was a series of seven books starting with "The Classmate Murders" which introduces the main character, Jim Richards, who has to admit he has become a senior citizen, reluctantly. Richards, one day, receives an email from a childhood sweetheart asking for his help, but by the time he reaches her, she has been murdered. His life turns around and he is pulled into numerous murders of women from his high school who he hasn't seen in forty years. Along with a friend of his, Buck, a big, mustached biker, they go off to track down the killer before he can get to one former classmate, Penny Wickens, a TV talk show host who Jim has just fallen for while protecting her. The killer is also murdering the women right out from under police protection, driving homicide detective Will Trapper crazy, and he slowly depends on Jim to help. There's humor, suspense, wild chases across suburban Detroit with cops, classic cars and motorcycle clubs; murder, mayhem, a good amount of romance and a twist ending.Jim and his crime fighters, continue in the other books, traveling to Las Vegas twice, back to Detroit and out to New York to solve murders involving dominatrix; mistresses; Bridezillas; magic and strip clubs.Book titles: Classmate Murders; Vegas Showgirl Murders; Dominatrix Murders; Mistress Murders; Bridezilla Murders; Magic Murders; Strip Club Murders and Made-for-TV Murders.

    Chapter 1

    ––––––––

I was busy in the Cold Case office trying to finish my reports on everything that happened in the last week. We found a kidnapped boy and tracked down his kidnappers and the murderer of his mother. We managed to find the boy's birth mother and reunite him with her. It was a hectic week and if it hadn't been for my ghostly partner, Wes, it would have been worse.

I wondered where Wes was. I hadn't seen him most of the morning. I looked over to Mary, my new partner and the woman I was sharing my life with. She was busy on her laptop, probably looking over our next cold case. Wes usually brought the case files to our attention as he was organizing all the ghosts in the file room as to who would be next to go.

Our job was to solve cold cases and set the victim's spirit free to go on to the hereafter. I couldn't see any of the ghosts in the file room, but Wes said there were a couple dozen. I was afraid to go in there after seeing what ghosts could do to a human. Our kidnapper and murderer, Rudolf, was pounced on by a gaggle of spirits that Wes had turned loose on him in a parking lot.

Mary turned to me and asked, Has Wes been in yet? I have a question about this case.

I haven't seen him yet, I'm sure he's in the file room playing 'find the ghost' with his charges, I said watching Mary. She suddenly looked shocked at something behind me. I turned quickly to see Wes standing at the end of my desk.

I looked back to Mary as she said, Is Wes standing there?

I turned back to Wes as he was grinning. Hi guys! Surprised to see me, Mary?

    How, Wes? I asked.

He passed through my desk and sat in a chair between Mary and me. Well, I was summoned back to the dark place and the Book Man gave me his thanks for the outstanding job we were doing down here. He said I was permanently assigned to Cold Case and asked me if there was anything I needed.

Mary was still looking shocked and sat with her mouth opened. Wes looked at her and said, Mary, it doesn't look good to have your mouth open like that. She closed it.

As I said, the Book Man asked if I needed anything and I told him that Mary was now part of our Ghost Squad and it would be nice if she could see and hear me. He thought about it and said I could try it temporarily. Just to see how it goes. Wes looked back at Mary and waved.

She slowly waved back as I said, This is great! Now I don't have to repeat everything you say.

That was the point I made. It was a waste of time for you to do that, Wes said. So, here I am.

Mary giggled and said, I pictured you to be a plump, gruff, bald man.

    Handsome, ain't I? he grinned.

The Book Man let you be seen by Mary? I asked.

You got it, we are now a complete team, Wes said, standing. Let's get rolling on these people in the file room.

It was the first time I heard Wes refer to the ghosts as people. I think he was mellowing.

This will work just fine, I said. So, Mary had a question for you and now she can ask you directly.

Mary was still looking surprised. Uh, yeah, she said, I need to know if this case involved some of our Detroit politicians. There is mention that the city attorney was involved in the investigation of the murder of Dorothy Blake.

I talked to Dorothy in the file room and she claims she was accused of being a hooker. She said she wasn't.

May as well bring her out here so we can ask her questions, I said.

Wes vanished, then reappeared shortly after. He was motioning to a chair, where I presumed Dorothy Blake was going to sit. He stood next to the chair, looking at Mary.

If you have questions, now's the time to ask. Wes said. Just pretend you can see her and ask.

Mary sat up and said, They claim you were a hooker, were you?

Wes said, after he listened, She was offended by their claims. She never prostituted herself. It was the city attorney who made the statement, since he was trying to seduce her, but she spurned him.
