Jim's Unsung Heroes - Kenneth Kerns

    Ken’s Dedication

For my grandfather and the entire Kerns family. May we never forget our past, or lose those few memories we all shared together.

    Trailblazers

A childhood of hiking in the mountains could not prepare me for what laid ahead.

It was Christmas Eve, 1944. We had arrived at the front lines, in the middle of France, determined to fight off Hitler's advances and to make the world safe for democracy. But it was cold. Damn cold.

In just a few short weeks, the rat-tat-tat of the enemy guns will have become background noise, something I learned to tune out, like crickets back home singing in the summertime.

All I had with me were the buddies in my unit, a photo of your grandmother in my pocket, and the conviction that we would win out.

    But war is tough.

"Can we eat now?" he asked. Kenny, all of three years old, had an appetite better suited for a high school jock then a precocious toddler with a sweet tooth.

    "No."

    "Grandpa!" Kenny wailed in protest.

His older sister wrapped her arm around his neck and sshhed him.

    A flash.

Their mother had just snapped yet another picture of the two kids sharing a chair together. It was their first holiday with the extended family, and the first time either of them were allowed in the den.

The grandfather smiled. That was going to be a memorable picture of the two
