About this ebook

A magical snow globe sets the stage for romance between a drama teacher who no longer believes in love and an enticing photographer picturing a different life.

Manhattan drama teacher Carlyn Cameron used to be a firm believer in happy-ever-after, but since the last smooth-talking charmer devoured her heart, she’s sworn off men, especially those of the arrogant, too-good-looking variety. And the “wolf in an Armani suit” hired as photographer for the school play she’s written and is directing definitely falls into that category. Like the Big Bad Wolf, she fears he’s hiding his true self.

Photojournalist Wolf Martinez has seen more than his share of ugliness through the lens of his camera. The nomadic life he leads doesn’t allow much time for serious relationships, especially now, but the feisty red-headed drama teacher looks good enough to gobble up. Once he finds his way out of his current forest of troubles, he’ll be back on the prowl to his next adventure.

Carlyn can’t seem to escape this particularly scrumptious wolf, especially after he moves into the apartment next door and charms her grandmother. He may be smokin’ hot, but can she trust him not to steal her heart? And Wolf finds himself irresistibly drawn to Carlyn, but can he picture a new life for himself, with room for two?

    PROLOGUE

Ten days before Christmas, Long Island, New York

Love this snow globe with the little elf. Carlyn Cameron reached for one of the globes set on the festively decorated table at the Christmas craft fair. Before she could touch the globe, the elderly woman selling them put out a hand, stopping Carlyn.

Sparkling brown eyes behind cats-eye glasses met Carlyn’s. The seller’s bright orange hair, in a shade not found in nature, and piled high in a sixties beehive, shone in the overhead lights.

Dearie, this one is for you. The woman picked up a different snow globe and handed it to Carlyn. When their hands touched, a chill ran up Carlyn’s arm. A buzzing in her head drowned out the cheerful voices in the high school gym. Her friends, Avery and Bella, each clutching the snow globes the eccentric woman had chosen for them, seemed to disappear.

Carlyn studied the globe in her hand. Little Red Riding Hood, holding a covered basket, stood in the center of the glass orb. Glittering flakes fell on her, making her blood-red cape shimmer with silver. Behind Red Riding Hood stood a large black wolf, looking as if he wanted to devour her.

Carlyn met the old woman’s eyes again. The buzzing in her head cleared. Red Riding Hood?

Trust the healing power of love to find you, the woman said in a sing-song voice. She’d said equally enigmatic words to Carlyn’s friends. Like a character in a scary movie, the eccentric woman sure knew how to create atmosphere.

Avery cradled her own snow globe and stared at Carlyn’s. I got Santa and a tree. Whatever that means.

Bella held out her globe with the little frog wearing a crown. Guess I’m going to kiss a lot of frogs.

The future holds many surprises, the lady with the orange hair said.

Carlyn shivered. Things were getting stranger and stranger.

Bella snapped her fingers. I get it. Little Red Riding Hood because you’ve got bright red hair.

Watch out for the wolf, Avery said, laughing.

Carlyn glanced from Avery to Bella. I’m not afraid of the big, bad wolf.

    CHAPTER ONE

Christmas Eve, the following year, Vermont

That’s the woman I’m going to marry.

Carlyn Cameron stopped in the middle of smoothing her emerald green satin gown over her hips and jerked her attention toward the deep masculine voice a few feet away. Her gaze collided with dark brown eyes that glittered with amusement. The owner of the eyes smiled at her and winked.

She scanned the tiny church vestibule. The only people there were her, Brown Eyes, and Avery’s brother-in-law, a happily married man, who laughed and walked outside. Left alone with Brown Eyes, who held a large camera, they traded stares.

With an expression Carlyn hoped made it clear his lame come-on didn’t work, she gave him a quick once-over. Good-looking, in a rough-hewn, motorcycle-rider kind of way, with long, thick black hair tied back from a high-cheekboned face, his tall, muscular body did his tuxedo proud. Bad-boy types born to ride usually didn’t do it for her, but she couldn’t turn away from Brown Eyes. His bronzed skin, the slight slant to his eyes, and his chiseled features spoke of American Indian or Hispanic heritage.

Carlyn knew Brown Eyes’ type – hot and sure of themselves with women. But she had to admit he did have a unique pickup line.

He raised an eyebrow. He knew she checked him out, and by the amused expression on his face, he enjoyed it. Heat crept up her neck. With a lift of her chin, she held his gaze for moments before she forced herself to turn away.

Once she’d dreamed of love, romance, and happy-ever-after. But that dream had died. Some men couldn’t be trusted. At least not the hot ones. And Brown Eyes, no doubt, fell into that group—good-looking and too confident in that knowledge. She had no use for a man like that. She’d been involved with someone too handsome for his own good, her dream lover come to life, a man like the heroes in the romance novels she devoured.

    He’d been no hero.

Bella, Avery’s other bridesmaid, approached, drawing Carlyn’s attention from Brown Eyes. Avery is asking for you. She thinks her hair needs touching up and you’re the only one who can do it. Bella rolled her eyes. A typical nervous bride. Avery looks perfect, but she doesn’t believe it.

With all those women in that small room, and all that perfume, I came out here to get some fresh air. Carlyn scowled at Brown Eyes. It’s too fresh out here for my taste.

He threw back his head and laughed.

Bella glanced from Carlyn to Brown Eyes, then shrugged.

The two women headed back to the dressing room.

Hold on a minute, Red. Let me get your picture. Brown Eyes’ voice stopped them.

Carlyn whirled around and faced him. My name is not Red.

He grinned, his perfect teeth white against the bronze of his skin, and lifted his camera, clicking away. He focused on Bella and took a few shots. Two of the most beautiful bridesmaids I’ve ever seen.

Carlyn put a hand on her hip. You’re full of it.

He stepped a little closer. If I can’t call you Red, what can I call you?

    Bridesmaid number two.

Chuckling, he held out a hand. I think we got off on the wrong foot. I’m Wolf Martinez, wedding photographer.

Wolf. Of course. She could be rude and ignore his outstretched hand, but Carlyn wouldn’t spoil Avery’s big day. Carlyn Cameron. When they shook hands, shivers, like tiny points of pleasure, skittered up her spine. Carlyn yanked her hand free.

Hello, Carlyn Cameron. Wolf’s gaze made a leisurely sweep down her body, then back to her face. His full lips tilted in a cocky grin, letting her
