About this ebook
Murder. Secrets. Hidden terrors.
War veteran and ex-FBI agent, Margaret Stillman, has faced a lot of bad things in her time. But when the Alpha of her Were Clan sends her on assignment to guard a prominent practitioner’s granddaughter, it gives her a sick knot in her stomach. For Margaret, hanging out with practitioners is only a small degree better than torture.
So when the dried corpse of a coven woman is found in the woods, her list of suspects is long and her willingness to find the killer borders on vindictive—until her investigation leads her into the labyrinth of caves at the edge of the coven’s property.
Because deep in the darkness of the tunnels lurks something much worse than a practitioner murdering with dark magic. Something vicious and deadly that survived the purging of its kind after the war.
And someone in the coven is controlling it.

Dedication
This short novella is dedicated to my family. Thanks for holding down the fort and being sympathetic when I had to research creepy stuff for the new monster on the block. I'm still shivering. Seriously.

barbedwireBody in the Woods
This can't be good,
Margaret Stillman said.
The early afternoon sun slanted through gaps in the foliage around her and Marc, the red and gold leaves swaying in the cool breeze as if dancing to the steady beat of life that eternally pulsed through the forest and the Blue Ridge Mountains it covered. The comfort of that ancient life force dimmed in Margaret's heart as she stared down at the source of the sharp, bitter stench that had taken her and Marc off the path.
The body of what had once been a woman lay on its side, pushed up against the base of a tree as if someone planned to come back for it, one leg cleanly taken off, as well as an arm. No dried blood on the ground or forest debris around it.
Margaret's gaze swept over the shriveled state of the face. Not what you'd expect either from a fresh kill or even one that had been here a while.
She winced, the pungent smell burning her sensitive Were nose and glanced at Marc. He still stared down at the corpse, frowning. During the paranormal terrorist war, he'd been part of one of the elite corps of the para-fighter division. He had a sense of humor that Margaret didn't always understand, was excellent in a fight, and was also one of the few people she trusted. Like her, the Were-panther had been sent to the Lake Lure coven to protect one of Mistress Raevinne's granddaughters.
Margaret crouched down to get a closer look at the body. We've been inside coven territory for the last mile. We'll have to report this to them.
They still won't like us being here. Even with Mistress Raevinne's worries proving true.
Picking up a stick next to her, she carefully brushed aside the scattering of leaves that had collected on the victim. The jeans and flannel shirt underneath were torn like a knife or claw had slashed through them, maybe during a struggle. The cuts showed patches of shiny gray skin with the outlines of bones underneath. It almost looks like it's been treated with some kind of chemical preservative.
A muscle ticked under the crescent moon tattoo on Marc's left cheek. Which would explain why the animals and insects haven't taken it apart.
Unauthorized magic?
she asked him.
This close to the coven? I don't know.
She tossed the stick aside and stood up, brushing off her hands on the camouflage fatigues she wore. She hoped they weren't dealing with an outlaw practitioner who practiced dark magic. She hadn't dealt with their kind much during the war, but the few times she had was enough to leave an impression. Where normal practitioners were sneaky and cruel, dark witches were cunning and brutal.
Her gaze swept over the body one more time, cataloging everything as another thought presented itself and sank into her gut. What if this is Caroline Raevinne?
Then, since Cooper put you in charge, you'll have a lot of Bone Clan paperwork to do.
Pulling out his hunting knife from the sheath on his belt, Marc notched the tree next to the body.
Until her grandmother takes revenge on me. Then you'll be filling out the paperwork, plus inter-species killing reports. In triplicate.
The bureaucratic down side of peaceful co-existence.
As they headed back to the main path, he marked a tree every dozen or so yards, giving them a trail to follow later. A panther thing, scratching trees, not
