About this ebook

Noah Robinson, a future candidate for Alter Ego Academy, longed to join the ranks of supers through its white marble halls. If he was good at anything, it was failing to meet Fullbring's high standards, but for the man whose power was giving himself more powers, who could honestly match? Fates changed the day he encountered Heatstroke, a hero in distress in Central Park. Time to roll the dice.

    Age of Supers

    Central Park, Manhattan NY

    September 21, 1989

Dimitri Gallos, a mighty Greek and formerly a lesser man. Dimitri bolted with epic speed and rammed his fists through a groping wave of human replications. He single-handedly drove a path straight down the front lines, his fists covered in bloody entrails that fizzled from existence shortly after. He zoomed into the sky to get a better vantage point, but grimaced once he found the hole he carved closed shut seconds later. They never stopped coming. The hordes were endless. Legion was hiding nearby, somewhere in Central Park. Somewhere below him.

Beads of thick sweat dripped from Dimitri’s chiseled chin as he struggled to remain airborne in the midst of the chaos brought about by his newfound nemesis. Leagues of human thralls swarmed below him, replications of Legion with a singular purpose, though each one carried the intelligence of a mastermind. Collectively, Legion was nearly perfect … nearly.

Dimitri tapped his earpiece and glanced down below with his enhanced vision. His team stood a chance, even drawn out as it was. He could make this work. Correcting the mistakes he ushered forth was all that mattered to him now.

Fuse? Tempest? he asked with a deep voice. He’d grown accustomed to it, but speaking with authority still seemed outlandish.

We’re holding him back, Lola shouted. He can’t keep this up.

    I’m fine! Vincent said.

No you’re not! she said. The power’s tearing him apart, Dimitri. Do something quick!

Dimitri dove down with half a plan in mind. He only needed to draw away some attention and they’d have room to flee. Vincent stood his ground, spraying the packs of replications with a mini-gun. Armor piercing incendiary rounds streamed through the chamber without end, new ones appearing once the old ones passed through. He mowed them down with impunity. Legion didn’t bother arming his masses. He didn’t need to.

Dimitri touched his feet to the grass and inhaled a deep breath before blowing out a fiery storm that scorched the green meadows of Central Park in a hellish aftermath. He looked out at the masses of charred remains and without missing a step, turned to face Vincent and Lola, the two of them dumbstruck by his awesome powers.

    Go, Dimitri said.

The hell I am! Vincent yelled.

A scorched anger burned in his eyes. He aimed the mini-gun at Dimitri and hugged the trigger tightly. Dimitri watched the barrels wind around as Vincent’s blood boiled before Lola approached from behind and gently wrapped her arms around him. She pressed her lips against the man’s dirt-smeared cheek and whispered something in his ear. Gradually, he lifted his finger and let the beast of a weapon hit the ground.

It’s time to go, honey, she said. We’ve done all we can.

Seconds later, after falling from his grip, the mini-gun evaporated into a wisp of smoke. Dimitri nodded toward the two of them and motioned toward an exit in the line. Fleeing from the park wouldn’t ensure their safety, not by a long shot, but it would give them time for him to hunt the villain down. As the two of them hobbled off, Dimitri turned around to see new bodies climbing over the disintegrating remains of their predecessors.

You never know when to admit defeat, do you? Dimitri said, grinning.

The horde halted its advance and stood before him in rows positioned over an ash-filled landscape. He peered through their bodies to see which one was the real one. The structure of Legion’s replications was always a little too uniform. He was looking for a hint of irregularity. Dimitri doubted he’d place himself in the front though, but there was always backup.

Legions’ mouths moved simultaneously in a vocalized gesture. It looked as eerie as it sounded, but he heard Legion could manipulate his replications directly if needed. Complete obedience.

You overreach yourself, Fullbring, they said. For each of my replications you murder, they transmit the entirety of their experiences directly to me. I have seen death ten thousand fold.

Dimitri smirked. Guess there’s one thing you’re good at.

Don’t mock me, they shouted. As an individual, I am a genius. As a collective of agents with shared consciousness, I am the most intelligent life form on the face of this world.

Dimitri drove a fist through the barrage as they dashed forward. Dozens of frantic hands latched onto him in an effort to capture him. He had the strength of ten men and sonic flight, but a band of mere humans was dragging him down. He pushed up with all his strength, but the bodies kept piling on. He whipped them off in sprayed lines, but Legion’s replications swarmed over him until he could no longer stand. His body collapsed to the ground, and he felt a dozen hands wrapped around his neck, choking the airways.

Gallos, I found him, Tommy said through his earpiece. He’s in the castle by the transverse. Been watching the whole thing. You know the one. Dimitri hardly mustered enough strength to grunt, and he couldn’t reach his earpiece to reply. Boss, I can feel it happening, Tommy said. I took too much time.

Dimitri cursed under his breath. His powers fell short once more. Would the next one be worth the cost? He might have wanted to ponder the repercussions, but he didn’t have the luxury of quiet contemplation. Dimitri, the super known as Fullbring, bolstered his resolve and lit up in a surge of epic energy with an explosive force that vaporized the ground into a crater one hundred meters wide in the middle of Central Park. His new power. He’d name it later.

He hovered high in the air and focused his attention to the castle north of him. It was a predictable vantage point, a shame he hadn’t predicted it sooner. Dimitri began to feel weak in his left arm. He laid a firm grip on it while he flew ahead at high speed, reaching the castle in question moments later. He scanned the premises to find it vacant of any living things except for Legion and an infant, the latter formerly known as Tommy Time Turner.

He broke through the roof and swooped up the baby boy in his arm before he aimed his vision at the man of the hour. Legion was a slender sort of person, not physically adept at all. The original standing in the heart of the castle living room wore a blue vest and brown slacks. He smiled at Dimitri and shot a cold stare through the lenses of his glasses.

Can you do it? Legion said. Can you take my life?

You’ve killed far more, Dimitri replied.

But you still can’t, he said, grinning. Legion paced around him. You can’t because you’re afraid of the cost. What is it, Fullbring? What happens when YOU use your powers?

If he wanted to die that badly, then the hell with it! Dimitri threw a left jab, but his hand phased through the skull. The sight left his mouth gaping wide open, and he sank back against a wall, cradling Tommy in his other arm.

Legion chuckled. I thought so. This is the end for you, Fullbring, though I must say you put up a valiant effort.

No, this couldn’t be the end. It wasn’t over. Not like this. Dimitri overheard the sounds of thousands upon thousands of footsteps heading his way, trampling across grass, sticks and leaves to soon barrel through the windows and strangle him to death. Dimitri set Tommy down and stared at his
