    Jacksonville Jack 2 - Moonrise

FBI agent Molly Syracuse was on her day off. She sat in the food court of the Avenues Mall in Jacksonville eating lunch. Normally she ate something healthy but there was some shopping she had needed to do and it had taken longer than expected. Her friend Linda Khodikyan had joined her for the shopping expedition and it had taken more time than Molly had really wanted it to. Molly Syracuse was a direct, no-nonsense, get things done kind of woman and her friend Linda was anything but that.

Molly sat down with her food. As she sat down Jacksonville Jack was at the Subway stand buying his lunch. He noted Molly’s table and picked one out six tables behind her. He ordered a Subway Club with provolone cheese, toasted. While the sub was being toasted Jack stared out over the food court. There were quite a few people at the food court, it was lunchtime in the mall. The cash registers in the stores weren’t humming very much due to the recession but the ones in the food court were doing fine. People still had to eat even if the bankers had stolen all their money.

The woman with Molly Syracuse had looked as though she was Armenian. When he was growing up Jack had had Armenian neighbors. There were a lot of Armenians in the United States, a lot of their ancestors had left Turkey in a hurry during World War I after their men folk went off to war for the Turkish Empire and never came home again. The Armenians were Christians unlike most of the people in that region of the world and they had a fairly distinctive look about them. While he was following Molly Syracuse and her Armenian friend earlier, Jack had wondered about targeting the Armenian woman but if he killed Molly’s friend then she would be after him hard and that might just be the difference between getting caught and not getting caught. Jack had studied Molly Syracuse for some time, he always studied the cops and FBI people hunting him and he knew she was smart. Although Molly looked Italian he’d run a background check on her and there was some Jewish ancestry in there too. That Jewish grandmother made her very intelligent, he knew that he needed to be careful around her.

The endless heat in Jacksonville had been getting to Jack of late. It seemed much hotter now than it had been when he first came to the city. In those days it rarely went above 93 degrees, now it was often 98 or 99. There were parts of the western part of the United States that were much hotter but it was humid in Florida. His sandwich was ready and on impulse he had it packed and followed Molly’s friend out to her car. He knew how to follow people and he didn’t need to get too close, all he needed was her license tag and he could locate her from that.

Linda Khodikyan walked out of the mall towards her car. There were plenty of people around and she didn’t even see the man following behind her. She was due at the gym later that afternoon and that was precisely what had attracted Jack to her. He had noted from the way she held her back that she worked out and a quick check of her arms and the way they moved told Jack that those arms were exercised. He would bet by the shape of her triceps that she lifted a weight behind her head, either lying on a weight bench with a two handed grip or a weight brought behind the back of the neck using one arm in a standing or seated position. If she kept that up she would never have what most women referred to as bird wings where the flesh was loose on the underside of their arms.

Suddenly Jack’s hunting instincts snapped on. There was nobody around now. He could tell which car the woman in front of him was going to. He could close the distance between them easily and effortlessly and be right behind her as she unlocked her car. From there he could take her down with one blow and stuff her in her car. He fought the desire down, the first thing the police would do when Linda Khodikyan disappeared would be to run the surveillance videos from the mall and his face would be on them. He slowed his walk and aimed for a car far away enough from the woman that he wouldn’t arouse suspicion. As he passed her car he memorized her tag, he would run it later.

Linda Khodikyan drove off. Linda was a trophy wife with a very nice existence. Her husband thought he had chosen her but in fact she had targeted him with the just same instincts as the man walking past her car used when he targeted his victims. She had closed in on her husband easily and effortlessly creeping up just as silently as Jacksonville Jack crept on his victims. Her husband never had a chance when she took him down. She was good in bed and she enjoyed sex with her husband but he was often too tired for sex because of his long work hours. Linda Khodikyan had sex with one other man besides her husband and when she could get it she did both men in one day. Unaware that she had come close to being a trophy of a different sort, Vilen Khodikyan’s trophy wife maneuvered her SUV out onto Southside Boulevard and headed for Fleming Island which was one of the better off parts of town.

Jack wrote Linda Khodikyan’s license tag onto a piece of paper and then walked back towards the mall. As Jack walked towards the entrance Molly Syracuse was deep in thought and he was the subject of
